EMPORIA STATE TRACK & FIELD HEAD TO CENTRAL MISSOURI ON FRIDAY

Hornets join Central Missouri, Pittsburg State, Lindenwood, Mo. Southern, Southwest Baptist and Mo. S&T

January 22, 2015-The Emporia State track and field teams will travel to the site of this year's MIAA Indoor Track Championships when they head to Warrensburg, Mo. on Friday. Nearly 60 Hornets are scheduled to compete in the UCM Invite at the Multipurpose Building on the campus of Central Missouri.
 
LAST WEEK AT THE SHOCKER PRELUDE
The Emporia State men had two provisional qualifiers and six event champions on their way to a team victory over Wichita State, Friends and Butler CC at the Shocker Prelude in Wichita, Kan. The Hornet women had four event champions and one provisional qualifier as they finished second in the team standings behind the host Shockers.
All-American Andrew Etheridge won the 60m hurdles and placed second in the 200m to lead the Hornet men. Samuel Saidi cleared 6-10.25 (2.09m) to win the men's high jump.
Emporia State got championships in the 400m, 600 yards and long jump for the men.  Duke Tibbs ran a 49.68 to capture the 400m title, Cody Miller turned in a 1:23.44 to win the 600 yards and Donald Wilcox jumped 22-05.00 (6.83m) to win the long jump championship.
Carmen King had the big day for the Emporia State women. She won the 60m and long jump and finished second in the 200m. 
Morgan Gilliland had the lone provisional for the Emporia State women as she finished third in both the shot and weight throw. 
Emily Schoenfeld won the 3000m with a time of 11:02.55 and Dominique Staats ran 1:00.22 to pick up the title in the 400m.
 
ALREADY A PROVO FOR THESE HORNETS
The Hornets have already got 11 provisional qualifiers this season. 
The 4x400m relay team of Ryan Dickson, Cody Miller, Andrew Etheridge and Duke Tibbs is ranked second in the nation, with a converted 3:14.49 from the K-State Winter Invitational. 
Etheridge, a multiple All-American and 2011 NCAA 110m hurdles National Champion outdoors, is also ranked sixth in the 60m hurdles with an 8.00 at the Shocker Prelude last weekend. Although not a provisional qualifier he ran a converted 21.94 in the 200m at the Shocker Prelude that is ranked 14th in the nation. He was named the MIAA Track Athlete of the Week for the second time this year thanks to that effort. 
Tibbs is ranked 14th nationally in the 400m with a converted time of 48.87 at the MSSU Early Bird Invite in December.
Another multiple time All-American, Payson Maydew will replace Etheridge in the mile relay. He is ranked fourth in the nation in the heptathlon.  He is scheduled to compete in the high jump, pole vault, 60m hurdles and in addition to the mile relay.
Although not a provisional qualifier, Dickson is ranked third in the MIAA and 20th in the nation in the 200m after turning in a converted 22.06 at the Shocker Prelude. He is also fifth in the MIAA with a time of 6.94 in the 60m at the Shocker Prelude.
Miller is the second ranked athlete in the MIAA in the 600 yard run.  He turned in a 1:14.50 at the Shocker Prelude.
Samuel Saidi rounds out the men's provisional qualifiers for the Hornets.  He cleared 6-10.25 (2.09m) at the Shocker Prelude and is ranked eighth in the nation.
Morgan Gilliland has provisionally qualified in two events for the Emporia State women.  She is ranked eighth in the shot at 46-06.00 (14.17m) from the Bill Easton Classic and is 22nd in the weight throw with a mark of 56-00.0 (17.07m) at the MSSU Early bird Invite.
Morgan Brant cleared 5-08.00 (1.73m) at the K-State Winter Invitational to rank fourth in the nation.
Carmen King and Peyton Weiss are both provisionally qualified in the long jump.  King is 15th in the nation at 18-09.25 (5.72m) while Weiss went 18-03.75 (5.58m) to rank 28th, with both marks coming at the MSSU Early Bird Invite.  King is set to compete in the 60m and 200m in addition to the long jump while Weiss will run a leg of the mile relay at UCM.
Maggie Wilson is ranked 18th in the nation in the pole vault after clearing 11-07.75 (3.55m) at the MSSU Early Bird Invite.  She is also scheduled to run in the 60m at the Shocker Prelude. 

OTHERS NEAR THE TOP OF THE MIAA
Although not provisional marks, several other Hornets are ranked at or near the top of the MIAA and the nation so far this season.
Jacob Bull ran the MIAA's best mile this season when he turned in a 4:18.76 at the K-State Winter Classic.
Jordan Smith is second and Thomas LaRoche third in the MIAA in the men's 800m so far this season. He ran a 1:56.65 at the Bill Easton Classic while LaRoche turned in a 1:56.83 at the Shocker Prelude.
Emily Schoenfeld has the third fastest times in the women's mile and fifth best 3000m this season. She turned in a 5:18.18 in the mile and a 10:41.78 in the 3000m at the MSSU Early Bird Invite. She is only scheduled to run the mile and a leg of the distance medley this weekend.
 
TEAM NATIONAL RANKINGS
The United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association has weekly rankings of all team that have at least one provisional qualifier.  The preseason release has four MIAA men's and four MIAA women's teams in the top 25 based on last year's results.  The Hornet men are ranked 32nd while the women are 77th in the preseason listing.  The first regular season ranking will come out on Jan. 28.
 
LAST YEAR AT THE UCM INVITE
In the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Meet of the Week, the Emporia State women posted an emphatic 28 point win in the team standings while the men placed third on Friday at the UCM Invite in Warrensburg, Mo. 
 The Emporia State women had five event champions, three provisional qualifiers and school record on the day. Nikki Wetstein and Carmen King again led the Hornets, combining for four first place and a second place finish. 
Wetstein broke her own school record with a time of 8.56 to win the 60m hurdles. She was also a member of the first place 4x440 relay team.  She joined Peyton Weiss, Lindsay Kunkel, and Dominique Staats to run a 4:03.12 to win the event. King picked up a pair of championships and a runner-up finish for the Hornets.  She won the 200m in a time of 26.24 and finished second with a 7.92 in the 60m on the track. Her other championship was a jump of 18-01.00 (5.51m) in the long jump.
The distance medley relay team of Taylor Stueve, Morgan Flowers, Monica Howard, and Emily Schoenfeld had the other first place finish for the Emporia State women.
The three some of Ryan Dickson, Payson Maydew and Duke Tibbs were the leaders for the Hornet men. 
Dickson ran a provisional qualifying time of 22.29 to place second in the 200m and was third with a time of 6.96 in the 60m. Maydew won the 60m hurdles with a personal best time of 8.45 and had a personal best of 14-09.00 (4.50m) to place third in the pole vault.
Tibbs just missed a provisional qualifier by .01 seconds as he ran a 49.80 to win the 400m.
Dickson, Maydew and Tibbs combined with Ashton Proctor to run 3:24.43 and win the 4x440 relay.
 
UP NEXT
The next action for the Hornets will be at the Jayhawk Classic on Friday, January 30 in Lawrence, Kan.
