February 15, 2014-The Emporia State men had an eight minute scoring drought in an 82-73 loss at Central Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon. With the loss the Hornets drop into a tie with Washburn for seventh in the MIAA behind Neb.-Kearney. Emporia State hosts both UNK and WU this week in White Auditorium.
The Hornets broke out on top and led 10-6 at the first media timeout. The two teams battled back and forth for most of the half with eight ties and ten lead changes in the first half. Aaron Anderson scored two layups in the final 1:27 to give the Bronchos a 38-35 lead at the break.
After giving a a turnover and dunk to start the second half, Emporia State went on a 9-2 run to take a 44-42 lead on Terrence Moore's three-pointer with 17:40 left. The Hornets would not score again until a Kaleb Wright layup with 9:25 remaining cut the Bronchos lead to nine at 55-46.
UCO would push the lead up to 16 points with 6:59 left when the Hornets started another run. Emporia State went on a 10-2 run to cut the lead to eight wiht 5:02 left before the Bronchos pushed it back to 12 with 3:18 left. A layup from Gavin Brown and a pair of free throws following a steal by Jevon Taylor made it 74-68 with 1:22 remaining, but the Bronchos hit four of four free throws down the stretch to ice the win.
Moore led the Hornets with 20 points and was joined in double figures by Paul Bunch with 12 points. Kaleb Wright had a team high six rebounds, three assists and four steals but was held to just four points after scoring 32 against the Bronchos in White Auditorium.
Even with the loss the Hornets clinched a spot in the MIAA Tournament. They will be playing for a shot at hosting a first round game on Wednesday night when they play host to Neb.-Kearney. Tip-off from Slaymaker Court in White Auditorium is set for 7:30 p.m.
