February 1, 2014-Laura Patrick had 28 points to lead the #3 Lady Hornets to an 84-75 victory at Neb.-Kearney on Saturday afternoon.
The Lopers had a 6-5 lead with 16:46 left in the first half when Patrick hit an old fashioned three-point play to ignite a 19-5 run for Emporia State.Patrick would end up with seven points during the run. The Lady Hornets took a 43-30 point into the break.
Emporia State never trailed in the second half, but Neb.-Kearney did close the gap to a single point at 69-68 with 3:51 left in the game. Patrick answered with a three-pointer that tied Jamie Augustyn for eighth on the Lady Hornet all-time list and gave Emporia State a 72-68 lead with 3:26 left. Desiree Wylie went four fof four and Merissa Quick hit one of two from the free throw line in the final 33.6 seconds to ice the victory.
Patrick hit ten of 17 shots, going three of seven from behind the three-point arc, and was a perfect five of five from the line. She was the only Lady Hornet in double figures but all nine Lady Hornets that played scored with Quick, Kelly Moten and Kionna Kellogg all had nine points. Kellogg and Quick each had seven rebounds and Quick blocked four shots.
The next action for the Lady Hornets will be at Washburn on Wednesday, February 5 in Topeka. Tip-off for the Turnpike Tussle is set for 5:30 p.m.
