EMPORIA STATE MEN LOSE MIAA OPENER TO NORTHWEST MISSOURI

Hornets outscored by 11 in final 7:34

December 3, 2014-Emporia State was outscored 22-11 over the last 7:34 as Northwest Missouri took a 63-57 victory in the MIAA opener in White Auditorium. The Bearcats hit 14 of 16 free throws during the run.

Northwest Missouri jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first two minutes of the game before the Hornets answered with a 10-2 run of their own to pull within 13-12 with 12:36 left in the half.  The Bearcats pushed the lead back to ten points when Emporia State went on a 13-0 run to take a 25-22 lead with 3:27 left in the half. The Hornets would take a 31-27 lead into the break.

Neither team could completely break away in the second half.  Emporia State matched their biggest lead at 46-41 on a Terrence Moore three pointer with 7:34 left. Back to back three pointers by Zach Schneider gave the Bearcats a 47-46 lead with 6:32 left.  The two teams would combine for just three field goals the remainder of the game.  Terrence Sardin gave the Hornets a 48-47 lead with a pair of free throws at the 5:35 mark, but Conner Crooker hit four straight from the charity stripe to give Northwest the lead for good. Josh Pedersen hit a three pointer with 26 seconds left to cut the Bearcat lead to four but NWMSU hit three of four free throws to ice the 63-57 decision.

Terrence Moore had 17 points to lead the Hornets and was joined in double figures by Jevon Taylor with 13 off the bench. Tyler Jordan led the Hornets with six rebounds.

Emporia State is back in action on Saturday when they play host to Rockhurst. Tip-off from Slaymaker Court in White Auditorium is set for 7:30 p.m.  The Hornets will host their Alumni Game on Saturday afternoon beginning at 1:00 p.m.
