EMPORIA STATE SOCCER ENDS SEASON AT MIAA QUARTERFINAL

Hornets fall at Southwest Baptist 3-1

November 5, 2014-Emporia State gave up three first half goals in a 3-1 loss at Southwest Baptist in the first round of the MIAA Soccer Tournament on Wednesday in Bolivar, Mo. It is the second straight year the Bearcats have eliminated the Hornets from the tournament.

Kate Jamison scored on an assist from MIAA Offensive Player of the Year Karla Jamison just under six minutes into the match to give SBU a 1-0 lead.  Karla Jamison then scored on cross from Taylor Schmidt in the 20th minute to give the Bearcats a 2-0 lead.  In the 27th minute Karla Jamison was able to loft the ball over MIAA Co-Goal Keeper of the Year Yadira Rivera as the teams went to intermission with the Bearcats leading 3-0.

The Hornets were outshot 12-5 in the opening 45 minutes. SBU had an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal as they attempted six corners to just one for the Hornets.  Rivera had five saves during the first half.

Things evened out in the second half with Emporia State getting seven shots and three on goal after the half.  Amy Heun found the net in the 80th minute on a cross from Kelsey Wakefield for the Hornets to avoid the shutout.

For the game Emporia State was outshot 20-12 as Rivera ended the match with seven saves.

The Hornets end the season 7-7-5 to post their second consecutive season with at least a .500 record.
