NOVEMBER IS FOR CHAMPIONSThe Hornets take on Southwest Baptist in the MIAA Tournament for the second straight year. It is the third time Emporia State has made the MIAA Tourney in Bryan Sailer's four years as head coach.
LAST TIME OUTIn her final regular season game Jordan Foutch scored the lone goal in Emporia State's 1-0 win at Neb.-Kearney that sent the Hornets to the MIAA Tournament for the second straight year. A scoreless first half saw the Lopers out shoot the Hornets by one at 5-4 while Emporia State had two corner kicks to none for Neb.-Kearney. Foutch scored the game winner in the 71st minute on a header off a pass from Ally Taylor. The defense held the rest of the way as Yadira Rivera recorded her seventh shut out of the year with just three saves.
THE COACHESBryan Sailer is 23-35-15 in his fourth year at Emporia State and the winningest coach in program history. He is 11-8-6 over his last 25 matches dating back to last year. He is 1-2 all-time in the MIAA Tournament. He is 2-2-1 against Southwest Baptist with an 0-1 record against the Bearcats in the MIAA Tournament.
Rob Podeyn is 52-48-13 in his sixth season as head coach at Southwest Baptist. He is 5-3-1 against Emporia State overall and 1-0 against the Hornets in the MIAA Tournament.
SCOUTING THE HORNETSEmporia State is 7-6-5 on the season and 4-5-5 in the MIAA to place seventh in the conference standings. It is the first time in the programs history they have put together back to back winning seasons. The Hornets have had nine different players score a goal with multiple goals from five players. Grace Linton has seven goals on the season to lead Emporia State in scoring. It is the most goals scored by a Hornet since Melanie Zdanek scored nine and Brandie Booth had seven in the 2005 season. Jordan Foutch and Amelie Heuhn both have three goals on the season while Jessica Schellhase and Elizabeth High both have three assists. Linton and Schellhase are both doubtful for the MIAA Tournament with injuries. Yadira Rivera has a 0.99 goals against average with seven shutouts this season. She had a streak of 424:46 without allowing a goal snapped at Missouri Western.  She holds the Emporia State career record with 16 shutouts in her first two years.
SCOUTING THE BEARCATSSouthwest Baptist is 14-4 on the season and went 11-3 in the MIAA to place second. The Bearcats dropped their final regular season game 2-1 at Northeastern State. They lead the MIAA in shots and assists and are second in goals scored. Karla Jamison is the leading scorer in the MIAA with 11 goals and seven assists on the season. Ellen Hammer is second in the MIAA in assists with nine. Cheyenne Forshey has a 0.87 goals against average in goal with five shutouts.
LAST TIME AGAINST SOUTHWEST BAPTISTEmporia State fell to Southwest Baptist by a final score of 3-0 on the EHS pitch.
The Bearcats scored the first goal in the 30th minute on a shot by Whitney Snow assisted by Karla Jamison. The score would remain 1-0 Bearcats until the 62nd minute when Jamison scored on a header assisted by Taylor Schmidt. Southwest Baptist's final goal came in the 88th minute on a unassisted goal by Snow.
Emporia State took a total of 14 shots with six of them ending up on goal. Southwest Baptist shot 18 times and seven of them were on target. Yadia Rivera recorded seven saves in the loss, while Cheyenne Forshey had six saves for the Bearcats.
SERIES HISTORYThis will be the 26th meeting between Emporia State and Southwest Baptist. The Bearcats lead the series 17-6-2 overall. The Hornets are 3-2-1 over the last five meetings.
HORNETS AND BEARCATS IN THE MIAA TOURNAMENTA stellar Emporia State season was concluded with a 2-1 loss to Southwest Baptist in the semifinals of the MIAA postseason tournament. The Bearcats got two first half goals from Karla Jamison, her ninth and tenth goals of the season. Emporia State answered with Emily Haselwood's first goal of the season 13 minutes into the second half. The Hornets took seven shots in the second half and two more corners than Baptist in the final 45 minutes, but were unable to score a game-tying goal. The Bearcats outshot the Hornets 27-11 and Yadira Rivera made nine saves.
UP NEXTThe winner will advance to the MIAA Semifinals against the winner of the match between Missouri Western and Ft. Hays State in the late game on Friday at the College Boulevard Activities Complex. Kick-off in Olathe will be at 7:00 p.m.
