OFF TO WESTERN MISSOURIThe Emporia State soccer team travels to the Midland Empire of Maryville and St. Joseph, Mo. this weekend for matches against Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western.
LAST TIME OUTEmporia State was involved in their fourth tie of the season and the second scoreless tie in a 0-0 final at Central Oklahoma on Sunday afternoon.
Emporia State's Yadira Rivera recorded her fourth shutout of the season and 13th of her career as she held Central Oklahoma scoreless for the first time since the season opener. She was credited with four saves on 17 total shots while the Hornets were able to get six shots on goal out of their 13 total shots.
The match was hotly contested with 34 total fouls, four yellow cards and a red card called during the match. The Emporia State bench and Jessica Schellhase had the yellows for the Hornets while the Bronchos had two yellows and the red.
THE COACHESBryan Sailer is 20-31-14 in his fourth year at Emporia State after a break through year in 2013 in which he led the Hornets to just the second winning record in the 13 year history of the program. He is 8-5-5 over his last 18 matches dating back to last year. He is 0-4-0 against Northwest Missouri and 2-2-0 against Missouri Western.
Tracy Hoza is 74-108-26 in her 12th season as head coach at Northwest. She is 13-5-2 against Emporia State.
Chad Edwards is 17-36-5 in his fourth season as head coach at Missouri. He is 2-2-0 against the Hornets.
SCOUTING THE HORNETSEmporia State is 4-2-4 on the season with both losses coming against teams ranked in the Top 20 at the time. They are 1-1-4 in the MIAA and on a three match unbeaten streak. The Hornets have had nine different players score a goal while the ninth person didn't score a goal until the 19th game last season. Grace Linton has four goals for the Hornets while Jordan Foutch has two goals and an assist on the season. Yadira Rivera has a 1.01 goals against average with four shutouts this season. She is currently on a streak of 286:54 without allowing a goal. She holds the Emporia State career record with 13 shutouts in her first two years.
SCOUTING THE BEARCATSNorthwest Missouri is 5-4-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the MIAA. They opened the season with three straight shut out wins over NSIC teams Northern State and Minn. State-Moorhead and NAIA member Saint Mary. They have gone 2-4-1 since and been outscored 9-4 in MIAA contests. Anna Holden and Crystal McElhose are the top scorers for the Bearcats with two goals and an assist each. Ashley Malloy has started every game in goal and has a 1.07 goals against average and four shutouts on the season.
LAST TIME AGAINST NORTHWEST MISSOURIEmporia State outshot Northwest Missouri 18-3 in the second half but could not overcome three first half goals from the Bearcats in a 4-1 loss in Maryville, Mo.Â
Northwest scored just 2:54 into the match on a goal by Anna Calgaard. They made it 2-0 with a goal from Anna Holden in the 20th minute. The Bearcats then scored with just 1:16 left in the opening half on a goal from Ashley Cole. NWMSU outshot Emporia State 10-2 in the first half.
Crystal McElhose made it 4-0 Bearcats in the 54th minute as the Hornets surrendered as many goals as they had given up in the previous eight matches combined.
Emporia State tried a furious comeback in the second half getting off 18 shots in the second period compared to just three for NWMSU. McKenzie Koch was the only Hornet to find the back of the net, getting an unassisted goal off a deflection in the 68th minute.
SCOUTING THE GRIFFONSMissouri Western is 5-4-1 on the season and 2-3-1 in the MIAA. They opened the season with three straight shut out wins over GAC members Harding and East Central and NSIC fo Bemidji State. They were winless in the next five matches before picking up a pair of victories last weekend. Tara Russell and KC Ramsell both have two goals and an assist to lead the Griffon offense. Sarah Lyle has started all ten matches and has a goals against mark of 0.57 with five shut outs.
LAST TIME AGAINST MISSOURI WESTERNEmporia State soccer left St. Joseph, Mo, with a 1-0 shutout victory over Missouri Western to improve its overall and MIAA records to above .500.
Bridget Wages scored her first goal of the season in the first half on an unassisted goal from the right corner to account for the match's lone score.
The Hornets finished with eight more shots in the match with a 19-11 advantage over the Girffons.
Melanie Nuessen earned the win in goal for the Hornets with three saves in her second start of the season.
SERIES HISTORIESThis will be the 25th meeting between Emporia State and Northwest Missouri. The Bearcats lead the series 15-7-2 overall.
This will be the 17th meeting between Emporia State and Missouri Western with the Hornets holding an 8-5-3 advantage.
