MIAA Game No. 2

Emporia State will play its second MIAA game of the season and third straight home game against the Southwest Baptist Bearcats with a 7:00 p.m. scheduled start time.

LAST TIME OUT

Emporia State won back-to-back games via a shutout for the first time sine 2004 by beating the Newman Jets 2-0.  The win followed a 2-0 MIAA win over Washburn.  The Hornets last shut out teams in back-to-back matches against South Dakota and Missouri Southern on September 11-12, 2004.

THE COACHES

Bryan Sailer is 11-24-7 in his third season at Emporia State. He is 7-8-4 in non-conference action after going 4-2 outside the MIAA last season. Prior to coming to ESU he led Barton County Community College to a 59-23-2 overall record in four seasons. He led them to the KJCAA Championships during the 2008 season and was named Jayhawk Conference Coach of the Year after guiding Barton to an 18-4 record. He is 1-0-1 against the Bearcats.

Rob Podeyn is 29-40-12 in his 5th season at Southwest Baptist. He has a record of 3-2-1 against Emporia state.

SCOUTING THE HORNETS

The Hornets are 4-3-0 on the season after winning their second straight game in Emporia. Emporia State upset #19 Regis 2-1 in double overtime. It was the first win over a nationally ranked opponent in the history of the Hornet soccer program. Bouknight leads the team with three goals. Goal Keeper Yadira Rivera has a save percentage of .895 to rank fourth in the MIAA. The 4-3 record is the best after seven games since a 4-1-2 start in 2005.

KNOW THE FOE

The Southwest Baptist Bearcats are 5-1-1 on the season and a perfect 2-0 in the MIAA after wins against Nebraska-Kearney and Fort Hays State. The Bearcats are 2-0 on the road. Katie Jamison leads the team in goals with four and shots with 35. Goal Keeper Paige Hemphill has a .795 save percentage. Through seven games the Bearcats have out shot their opponents 137-87.

LAST TIME VS. SOUTHWEST BAPTIST 

The Hornets and Bearcats played to a scoreless tie in 2012. Baptist out shot the Hornets 18-13 in that game. However, Emporia State had three more shots on goal than the Bearcats.

SERIES RECORD

This is the 22nd meeting between Emporia State and Southwest Baptist. The Bearcats lead the series 16-3-1. The Hornets last defeated Baptist 3-0 in 2011.

UP NEXT

Emporia State will host #14 Central Missouri on Sunday, September 29. Kick off is set for 2:00 p.m. They will host Nebraska-Kearney October 4, in the fifth of six consecutive home matches.
