March 2, 2013-The Lady Hornets put four players in double figures as they punched their ticket straight to Kansas City with a 63-55 win at Pittsburg State on Saturday afternoon. Emporia State's win coupled with Northwest Missouri's win over Truman gives the Lady Hornets th #4 seed in the MIAA Tournament.
There were four ties and six lead changes in the opening half with neither team taking more than a five point lead. The Gorillas led 22-17 with 2:52 left in the half when the Lady Hornets got back to back three-pointers by Laura Patrick and Rheanna Egli to ignite a 10-4 half ending run. Sarah Wood gave Emporia State a 27-26 lead at the half on an old fashioned threepoint play with .3 seconds left.
The Gorillas scored the first seven points of the second half to take a 33-27 lead. Sarah Wood and Desiree Wylie combined on a 9-1 run to give the lead back to the Lady Hornets at 36-34. Pitt State tied the game twice more before Emporia State went on a 9-2 run to take the lead for good. Rachel Hanf hit three free throws and combined with Laura Patrick on back to back threes to give the Lady Hornets a 47-40 lead.
Emporia State would keep it at least a two possession game the rest of the way and hit five of six free throws in the final 2:04 to preserve the win.
Laura Patrick led four Lady Hornets in double figures with 14 points. Rachel Hanf scored 12 while Sarah Wood had 11 and Desiree Wylie added ten points. Merissa Quick had eight rebounds while Hanf dished five assists.
With the win Emporia State secured the fourth seed in the MIAA Tournament and will play the winner of the Truman-Southwest Baptist first round game. Tip-off in Kansas City is set for 2:15 p.m. on Friday.
