The Lady Hornets take on Northeastern State on Alumnae Weekend. The two are battling for a bye straight to Kansas City for the MIAA Tournament.
THE COACHES
Jory Collins is 59-25 in his third year as the head coach of the Lady Hornets and has guided them to the MIAA Tournament Championship Game in each of his first two seasons. He has seven wins against Top 25 teams. This is his 12th season on the Lady Hornet coaching staff and Emporia State has advanced to the NCAA tournament in ten of those seasons. He is 2-1 against Northeastern State.
Randy Gipson is 276-127 in his 14th year at Northeastern State. He is 1-3 all-time against Emporia State.
ABOUT THE LADY HORNETS
Emporia State is 16-7 on the year and 11-4 in the MIAA. The Lady Hornets have won 11 of their last 13 games and had won nine straight prior to their 63-60 loss to Pittsburg State.
LAST TIME OUT
The Emporia State Lady Hornets saw their nine game winning streak come to an end in a 63-60 loss to Pittsburg State in White Auditorium. Pitt State led 59-51 with 3:46 left when Emporia State answered with a 7-0 run. Brigit Hesser hit one of two free throws with 21 seconds left to give the Gorillas a 62-60 lead. The Lady Hornets worked the clock down and Merissa Quick missed a jumper with :02 left. Quick ended with a career high 31 points for the Lady Hornets while Rachel Hanf added a double-double of 11 points and ten rebounds.
ABOUT THE RIVERHAWKS
Northeastern State is 17-7 on the year and 12-4 in the MIAA. They have won nine of their last 11 games overall but are just 7-7 away from Jack Dobbins Field House this season. Taylor Lewis is the second leading scorer in the MIAA in conference only games at 17.8 points per game and is averaging 16.3 overall this season. As a team they lead the MIAA in made three-pointers at 8.4 per game and are in the top ten nationally in three-pointers made and percentage.
THE SERIES
Emporia Sate leads the all-time series 5-2 following Northeastern's MIAA opening win earlier this year. This is just the third meeting in White Auditorium with the Lady Hornets winning the previous two contests. The Lady Hornets defeated the Riverhawks in the 2010 NCAA South Central Regional Championship game in Canyon, Texas on the way to their first NCAA Division II National Championship.
LAST TIME VS. NORTHEASTERN ST.
The #21 Emporia State Lady Hornets were held to just .306 shooting from the field and were out-rebounded by four in a 63-51 loss at Northeastern State to open MIAA play. Laura Patrick led the Lady Hornets with 15 points and was joined in double figures by Rachel Hanf with 12 points.
