HORNETS REACH SEMIFINALS

Emporia State will make it's first ever appearance in the MIAA's Soccer Final Four weekend.  The #7 seeded Hornets will faces #3 seed Southwest Baptist, at the College Boulevard Activities Complex in Olathe, Kan.

LAST TIME OUT

The Hornets upset #2 seed Northeastern State 3-0 in the quarterfinal round. Jordan Foutch and Mallory Walden scored first half goals in the win, which served as the first postseason victory for the program.

THE COACHES

Bryan Sailer is 16-28-10 in his third season at Emporia State and ranks No. 2 on the Hornets all time win list. Prior to coming to ESU he led Barton County Community College to a 59-23-2 overall record in four seasons. He led them to the KJCAA Championships during the 2008 season and was named Jayhawk Conference Coach of the Year after guiding Barton to an 18-4 record. He is 2-0-1 against the Bearcats.

Rob Podeyn is 36-44-12 in his 5th season at Southwest Baptist. He has a record of 3-3-1 against Emporia state.

SCOUTING THE HORNETS

The Hornets are 9-7-3 overall. The Hornets are 1-0-1 against nationally ranked teams this season. ESU upset #19 Regis 2-1 in double overtime earlier in the season. The Hornets then played #5 ranked Central Missouri to a 0-0 tie in double overtime. Emporia State has a program record ten shutouts. The Hornets nine wins are the most since 2004.

KNOW THE FOE

Southwest Baptist has a record of 12-5-1 after advancing to the semifinal round with a 2-1 win over Lindenwood.  Ashley Carson scored her ninth goal of the season against the Lions.  Karla Jamison added a first half goal for Baptist.

LAST TIME VS. SBU

Emporia State defeated the Bearcats 1-0 on September 27, in  a match at the Emporia HS Pitch.  Elizabeth High scored the game-winning goal with less than five minutes remaining in regulation. Yadira Rivera made seven saves in the MIAA victory.  It was Rivera's third of four consecutive shutouts

AGAINST TOURNAMENT FIELD

Emporia State has a 2013 record of 3-0-1 against teams left in the MIAA Tournament field. The Hornets twice defeated Washburn, beat Southwest Baptist, and tied Central Oklahoma.  The #8 seed Bronchos upset #1 seed Central Missouri to reach the semifinals.

PROGRAM RECORDS SET IN GOAL

Yadira Rivera has already set a program record for most shutouts in a season with nine. That mark eclipsed the old record of seven set by Erin Allen in 2004.  She is also on pace to break the season record for goals against average. Nikki Schmitz average was 0.94 in 2011. Rivera is currently owns a 0.76 average.

MIAA FINAL

The winner of Friday's match will face the winner of #8 Central Oklahoma and #4 Washburn in an 11:00 a.m. start on Sunday, Nov. 10.
