November 5, 2013-The seventh seeded Emporia State soccer team went on the road and defeated second seed Northeastern State in the quarterfinals of the MIAA Tournament in Tahlequah, Okla. It is the first postseason win in school history.
The Hornets got on the board 20:18 into the match on a goal from Jordan Foutch. She collected a pass from McKenzie Koch inside the box on the right side and put the ball inside the far post for her fourth goal of the year.
Mallory Walden made it 2-0 Emporia State with 1:35 left in the half when she headed in a free kick from midfield by Shannon Thomas.Â
The RiverHawks came out firing in the second half with three corners and five shots in the first 15 mintues. The Hornets finally got an opportunity when Koch scored her fifth goal of the season in the box off a corner from Tommi Bouknight at the 60:18 mark for a 3-0 lead.
Emporia State's defense held firm in the second half despite getting outshot 17-3 in the period to record the tenth shutout of the season. Yadira Rivera had seven saves in the match to notch her ninth individual shutout of the year.
With the win Emporia State will advance to the MIAA Tournament Semifinals for the first time in school history. The Hornets will play third seeded Southwest Baptist at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 8 at the College Boulevard Activities Complex in Olathe, Kan.
NOTES:
With the win Emporia State improves to 9-7-3 on the year and is guaranteed their first winning record since going 10-8-2 in 2004.
Koch's five goals are the most by a Hornet since Andrea Harris scored five in 2006 and her 11 points are the most since Melodie Zdanek score 21 points on nine goals and three assists in 2005.
