ALMOST HOME   
The #5 Lady Hornets return to Kansas after three games in California to take on Newman in Wichita. This is the third year the two have met in an early season game.
 
LAST TIMEOUT
In an early season game with both regional and national implications,  #5 Emporia State defeated #9 Concordia-St. Paul 71-52 in the Division II Tip-Off Classic in Anaheim, Calif. The Lady Hornets jumped out to a 7-2 lead early only to see the Golden Bears take a 13-12 lead with 10:42 left in the first half.  Emporia State then used an 8-1 run to take the lead for good. The lead would grow to 24 points with 3:08 left in the game before the Lady Hornets settled into the 19 point victory. Amber Vandiver led the Lady Hornets with 18 points and ten rebounds. She was joined in double figures by Laura Patrick with 14 points, Kelly Moten with 12 and Rheanna Egli with 11 points. Emporia State outrebounded Concordia-ST. Paul 52-30 and held the Bears to just 31.1% shooting.

THE COACHES
Jory Collins is 69-27 in his fourth year as the head coach of the Lady Hornets. He has 12 career wins against Top 25 teams seven wins in the last eight match-ups. This is his 13th season on the Lady Hornet coaching staff and Emporia State has advanced to the NCAA tournament in 11 of those seasons. He is 1-1 against Newman.
Darin Spence is 12-17 in his second season at Newman.  He is 150-160 in his 11th year as a head coach at four year schools. He is 0-2 against Emporia State, 0-1 at Newman.

ABOUT THE LADY HORNETS
Emporia State is 3-0 with two wins over teams that were in the NCAA Tournament last year and received votes in this year's WBCA Preseason Poll. They lead the MIAA in rebounding and rebound margin after three games. Merissa Quick is averaging a team best 13.0 points nad 8.3 rebounds per game. Seven players have scored in double figures.
   
ABOUT THE JETS
Newman is 1-1 on the season and will be playing their third straight home game to open the season. Alexandra Ciabatton is averaging 27.0 points and 9.5 rebounds per game to lead three Jets in double figures.

THE SERIES    
The Lady Hornets lead the all-time series 13-1 over Newman with the lone loss coming in the last trip to Fugate Gym on Nov. 11, 2011.

LAST TIME VS. NEWMAN
The #19 Emporia State Lady Hornets got 21 points and eight rebounds from Merissa Quick and a double-double from Desiree Wylie in a 77-66 win over Newman at White Auditorium.  Emporia State outscored Newman 36-26 in the paint and outrebounded the Jets 48-39 on the night.  Wylie had 12 points and 11 rebounds in her first regular season game as a Lady Hornet.  Laura Patrick joined Quick and Wylie in double figures with 12 points and added four assists.

UP NEXT
The #5Lady Hornets make their 2013-14 debut on Monday against Tabor. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. from Slaymaker Court in White Auditorium.
