COMING HOME
After playing four games in four gyms in ten days, Emporia State will make their 2013-14 home debut against McPherson College on Slaymaker Court in White Auditorium.
LAST TIME OUT
Playing their third road game in three days, Emporia State outscored Rockhurst 36-25 in the second half on the way to a 74-62 season opening win in Kansas City on Sunday night. The Hornets came out sluggish and trailed 19-9 with 12:46 left in the first half. The Hawks led 32-25 with 4:09 remaining in the half when the Hornets went on a 13-3 run to take the lead. Wright scored 20 points to lead three Hornets in double figures. Paul Bunch had 18 points on nine of 12 shooting, 11 rebounds and was credited with two blocked shots.
THE COACHES
Shaun Vandiver is 23-32 as he starts his third season at Emporia State. A first round draft pick by the Golden State Warriors in 1991 spent ten years as an assistant coach at the NCAA Division I level. As a player he led Hutchinson CC to the 1988 NJCAA National Championship before earning first-team All-Big 8 honors at Colorado. This is his first meeting with McPherson.
Tim Swartzendruber is 107-60 in his sixth season at McPherson. This is his first meeting with Emporia State.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS
Emporia State put three players in double figures and shot 50% from the field in their opening game at Rockhurst. The Hornets outrebounded the Hawks by ten and held RU to just 30.3% shooting for the night. This will be the fourth game in five days for the Hornets counting exhibitions. Paul Bunch had a double-double in his first official outing with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
McPherson is 4-1 on the year after going 1-1 on a trip to Texas over the weekend. They have four players averaging in double figures led by Samson Shivers at 18.6 points per game.
SERIES HISTORY
Emporia State leads the all-time series 14-2 but this is the first meeting since the NAIA District 10 playoffs in 1989.
LAST TIME OUT VS. McPHERSON
Ryan Sprecker scored 27 points and Bill Pitko pulled seven rebounds as Emporia State escaped the first round of the NAIA District 10 Tournament with a 90-88 win over McPherson in White Auditorium.

Center Paul Bunch (Sr./Chicago, Ill.) had 18 points and 11 rebounds at Rockhurst in the Hornets opener. He averaged 9.7 points on 59.1% shooting and 6.3 rebounds in the Hornets three exhibition games. He had 20 points and eight boards in Emporia State's win at UMKC. He had nine points and nine rebounds with three blocks at Oklahoma State. He was named to the MIAA All-Defensive Team as well as being an Honorable Mention All-MIAA selection last season. He averaged 12.7 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per game last year. He was ranked third in the nation in shot blocks and is the top returning shot blocker in Division II this season. He scored 15 points with ten rebounds and four blocked shots against Washburn. He scored 12 points on six of eight shooting with seven rebounds and seven blocks against Northeastern State. He scored 11 points with six blocks against Pittsburg State. He had 16 points and 12 rebounds at Missouri Southern in Joplin. He had 12 points and ten rebounds against Lindenwood. He had 12 points and career high seven blocks before fouling out at Neb.-Kearney. He scored 14 points with eight rebounds and five blocks against Central Oklahoma. He had 18 points with nine rebounds against Missouri Southern. He had a career high 23 points to go with 13 rebounds at Southwest Baptist. He had 14 points, ten rebounds and three blocks at Washburn. Guard Kaleb Wright (Sr./Chicago, Ill.) led Emporia State with 20 points at Rockhurst. He averaged a team best 12.0 points in the three exhibition games including 17 in the win over UMKC. He had seven points and four rebounds at Oklahoma State. He earned honorable mention All-MIAA honors after scoring 14.4 points and 2.9 assists per game last year. He scored 23 points at Missouri Southern. He scored 18 points against Lindenwood. He had ten points, seven rebounds and career high seven assists at Neb.-Kearney. He had 19 points against Missouri Southern. He scored 16 points with a career high four steals against Missouri Western. He scored 13 points with seven assists against Ft. Hays State. He was named MIAA Player of the Week after scoring 25 points on ten of 13 shooting against Southwestern. He scored 20 points and three assists at Central Missouri. He scored 18 points on 8 of 13 shooting against Missouri S&T. He led the Hornets with 20 points at Western Oregon and had 17 points, going 4 of 6 from three point range against Saint Martin's. He scored 25 points against Central Christian. He scored 22 points at Missouri S&T. He had a team high 11 points at K-State. He averaged 9.4 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 2.0 assists in 29 games with Mineral Area College in 2010-11.

Forward Gavin Brown (Sr./Junction City, Kan.) had five rebounds at Rockhurst. He led Emporia State with 11 assists in the three exhibition games. He was ranked tenth in the MIAA in rebounding last season. He scored 11 points with a career best three of three effort from the three point line against Northeastern State. He scored 12 points and was six of six from the free throw line against Pittsburg State. He had a team high nine rebounds at Central Oklahoma. He had career highs of 13 rebounds and seven assists against Lincoln. He scored 12 points on five of seven shooting with six rebounds, three steals and two blocks at Northwest Missouri. He had 13 points and ten rebounds against Missouri Western. He had 11 rebounds against Southwestern. He had seven points, five rebounds, four assists and three blocks at Central Missouri. He had eight rebounds and scored ten points at Newman. He had 15 points and 12 rebounds while adding five assists and three steals against Missouri S&T. He had a team-high ten rebounds and added eight points and two blocks at Missouri S&T. He led the team with six rebounds and added eight points at Kansas State. He also led Emporia State with 14 points and six rebounds at Kansas. Brown led Cowley CC to a 24-10 record and spot in the NJCAA Region 6 Championship game in 2011-12.
WE WANT MOORE
Guard Terrence Moore (So./Wichita, Kan.) scored 11 points with three steals at Rockhurst. He was the second leading scorer for the Hornets during the exhibition season. He had 17 points in the win over UMKC and a team high 15 points at Wichita State. He scored 13 points with six rebounds and two steals in the Hornets MIAA Tournament game against Missouri Southern. He scored 13 points with three steals against Northeastern State. He had a career high four steals against Lindenwood. He had three steals against Missouri Western. He scored ten points with six rebounds and a pair of steals at Southwest Baptist. He scored 11 points on five of seven shooting against Ft. Hays State. He had eight points and three steals at Washburn. He scored a career high 19 points on nine of ten shooting against Southwestern. HHe scored nine points with three steals in the exhibition game at Kansas State. He scored 10 points off the bench with a team high three steals at Kansas. He was the Hornets leading scorer at Tulsa with 12 points, and led the team with four steals. Moore was a First Team All-State performer for Wichita Heights HS as a senior. He led the Falcons with 17 points in the Kansas State Championship Game.
HE'S SWANKY
Guard Micah Swank (So./Pratt, Kan.) scored six points on two of six shooting from behind the arc at Rockhurst. He was the second leading rebounder for the Hornets at Oklahoma State with seven boards. He had six points on two of three shooting from the three-point line against Missouri Southern in the MIAA Tournament last year. He had three assists and just one turnover at Northwest Missouri. He was two of three from behind the arc at Neb.-Kearney. He had a team high four assists at Washburn with just one turnover. He scored a career high nine points, going three of four from behind the three-point line, with five assists against Southwestern. He grabbed two rebounds and two assists at Newman. He earned his first career start against Missouri S&T and scored six points, going four of four from the foul line. He had three points at Western Oregon and scored six points with six rebounds against Saint Martin's. He grabbed three rebounds in 21 minutes at Missouri S&T. scored five points, including a three-pointer at Kansas State. He had four points and two assists at Kansas. He scored three points and pulled down three rebounds at Tulsa. Swank was named First Team All-State in 2012, as the Greenbacks went 24-2 and took fourth at state in Class 4A. He was named the Class 4A Player of the Year by the Hutchinson News in 2009-10 and was a third-team All-Kansas selection as Pratt finished 23-3 and third at the state tournament.
TAYLOR MADE
Guard Jevon Taylor (Fr./Denver, Colo.) scored five points at Rockhurst after scoring seven at Wichita State. He played at George Washington HS last year. He averaged 18.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 1.4 assists per game for the Patriots. He connected on 74 of 164 three-point attempts to lead Colorado Class 5A in makes and rank sixth in all classes. He earned first-team All-Denver Public League honors and was a an honorable mention All-State player.
JORDANAIRRE
Guard Tyler Jordan (Fr./Ballwin, Mo.) had four points and five rebounds at Rockhurst. He had seven points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals at Oklahoma State. He played at Eureka HS last year. He averaged 13.2 points, four rebounds and three assists per game as a senior for the Wildcats. He was a three-time All-Suburban West Conference and All-District performer in the St. Louis, Mo. area. He was a four year starter that led Eureka HS to conference and district championships his senior year. Â
TEMAAT MIGHT
Guard Jay Temaat (Fr./Lenexa, Kan.) was four of four from the free throw line at Rockhurst. He averaged 6.7 points per game in the three exhibitions and was the leading scorer for the Hornets at Oklahoma State with 12 points in 13 minutes. He hit three of ten three pointers agaisnt the Cowboys. He played at Shawnee Mission West HS last season. He averaged 17 points and four assists per game for the Vikings on his way to honorable mention All-State honors at the Class 6A level.
SHARE THE WISDOM
Center McWisdom Badejo (So./Dallas, Texas) scored eight points at Wichita State. He is a 6-9 transfer from Florida A&M. He averaged 1.1 points and 1.3 rebounds for the Rattlers with a season high ten points and six rebounds against Allen. He is from Dallas, Texas and played at Timberview HS in Arlington, Texas. He was listed as one of the top names in college basketball last season.
WINDY CITY WILDMAN
Forward Terrence Sardin (Fr./Chicago, Ill.) had three rebounds and two blocks at Rockhurst. He played at Perspectives Academy last season. He averaged 12 points, 11 rebounds, 4 blocks for the Warriors. He had a triple double with 23 points, 13 rebounds and ten blocked shots against Brooks HS in the regional championship game.
THE BENTLEY OF BICYCLES
Forward Josh Pedersen (Fr./Olathe, Kan.) had four rebounds at Oklahoma State and hit the only shot he took. He played at Shawnee Mission South HS last year. He averaged 14.2 points and 8.6 rebounds for the undefeated Class 5A state champion Raiders. He was a first-team KBCA Class 5A All-State selection as a senior.
MADE IN ENGLAND
Forward Daniel Shaw (Jr. /Cambridge, England) was two of two from the free throw line at Rockhurst. He matched his MIAA high with five points at Pittsburg State last season. He recorded a double-double against Saint Martin's with 12 points and 11 rebounds. He scored 13 points going four of five from the field and five of six from the foul line against Central Christian. He scored two points at Kansas State. He had four rebounds at Kansas. He led the team with nine rebounds at Tulsa. Shaw appeared in all 28 games coming off the bench in 2011-12 at Alaska-Fairbanks. He averaged 4.9 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. He lettered in basketball for four years, soccer for five years, and rugby for three years at St. Bedes Inter-Church school.
A-MAYES-ING
Forward Nick Mayes (Jr. /Laramie, Wyo.) hit one of two free throws against Southwestern last season. He was two of two from the line at Kansas. He saw action in five games in 2011-12 as a reserve. He played a season high 11 minutes at Pittsburg State on Feb. 15 and pulled down six rebounds. Mayes scored a career high three points at Lincoln.
PLAYING THE FIELD
The Hornets out-scored or matched their opponent from the field in 22 of their 27 games last season. In their 14 losses, the Hornets were out-scored by an average of 10.5 points from the free throw line. In 12 of the 14 losses the Hornets attempted fewer free throws than their opponent made. They shot 88 fewer charities than their opponents in the 14 losses.
FRIENDLY CONFINES
Emporia State has won 115 of their last 152 games in White Auditorium. Twenty-eight of the 37 losses have been by less than ten points. The Hornets are 338-151 (.691) since 1979 in White Auditorium. The Hornets have posted a winning home record for ten of the past 11 years in White Auditorium.
SLAYMAKER COURT
The court at William L. White Auditorium was formally named Ron Slaymaker Court at half-time of the Hornets win over Washburn on Feb. 28 after the City of Emporia approved a proclamation at their Feb. 20 city commission meeting. Slaymaker was an All-American player for the Hornets and the winningest coach in Emporia State history with 464 wins.
HORNETS RANK 19TH IN NATION IN ATTENDENCE
The Emporia State men's basketball team continued a string of 11 straight years ranking in the top 25 in attendance among the nearly 300 NCAA Division II basketball playing schools. The Hornets drew an average of 1,678 fans to their 13 home games in White Auditorium during the 2012-13 season to rank 19th nationally. Emporia State outdrew 95 NCAA Division I schools during the 2012-13 school year.The Hornets moved up one spot from last year's #20 ranking. This is the ninth straight year the Hornets have been in the top 20 nationally in attendance.As a conference the MIAA drew 254,543 fans to the 186 games to lead all Division II conference in average attendance at 1,369 fans per game. The MIAA's total attendance was better than nine NCAA Division I conferences.
IN THE RAFTERS
Five Hornets have had their jersey's retired to the wall of White Auditorium.
•Wilbur Reeser (1944-48) - Reeser was named an NAIB All-American and was the Hornets leading scorer as the won a conference championship in 1948.
•Ron Slaymaker (Player 1954-60, Coach 1970-98) - As a player Slaymaker was named All-Conference and All-American during the 1957-58 season. As a coach he won an ESU leading 464 games between 1970 and 1998.
•Jim Fraley (1956-60) - Fraley was the school's all-time leading scorer (1,509) until Brian Robinson broke his record in 1985. He was named Second-team NAIA All-American.
•Doug Glaysher (1960-64) - Glaysher was named an All-American after leading the Hornets to the NAIA National Semi-finals in 1964. He graduated as the second leading scorer in ESU history.
•Brian Robinson (1984-86) - Robinson was named a first team All-American in both his junior and senior season. He is the ESU all-time leading scorer with 2,533 career points.
