November 10, 2013-Playing their third road game in three days, Emporia State outscored Rockhurst 36-25 in the second half on the way to a 74-62 season opening win in Kansas City on Sunday night.
The Hornets came out sluggish and trailed 19-9 with 12:46 left in the first half. The Hawks led 32-25 with 4:09 remaining in the half when the Hornets went on a 13-3 run. Kaleb Wright and Paul Bunch each scored four points during the run as the Hornets went into the half with a 38-37 lead.
An 11-2 run by the Hornets in the second half pushed the lead to double digits at 53-42 with 13:11 left and the lead would stay between eight and 15 points the rest of the way.
Wright scored 20 points to lead three Hornets in double figures. Paul Bunch had 18 points on nine of 12 shooting, 11 rebounds and was credited with two blocked shots for Emporia State. Terrence Moore was the other Hornet in double figures with 11 points and three steals.
As a team Emporia State shot 50.0% from the field while limiting Rockhurst to 30.3% shooting for the game.
The Hornets will make their home debut on Tuesday night against McPherson College. Tip-off for their fourth game in five days is set for 7:00 p.m. from Slaymaker Court at White Auditorium.
