The Lady Hornets put their three game winning streak on the line as they travel to Neb.-Kearney for their first MIAA match-up with the Lopers.
THE COACHES
Jory Collins is 53-24 in his third year as the head coach of the Lady Hornets and has guided them to the MIAA Tournament Championship Game in each of his first two seasons. He has seven wins against Top 25 teams. This is his 12th season on the Lady Hornet coaching staff and Emporia State has advanced to the NCAA tournament in ten of those seasons. This is his first meeting with Nebraska-Kearney.
Kevin Chaney is 26-45 in his third year at UNK. This is his first meeting with Emporia State.
ABOUT THE LADY HORNETS
Emporia State is 10-6 on the year and 5-3 in the MIAA. The Lady Hornets have won five of their last six games and are undefeated at home on the season. Eleven of the 14 NCAA schools they have played have received votes in the WBCA National Poll or played in last year's NCAA Tournament.
LAST TIME OUT
Rachel Hanf scored a career high 23 points to lead the Emporia State women to an 89-57 win over Central Oklahoma. Emporia State would close the half on a 26-7 run to lead 49-29 at the intermission. The lead would grow to as much as 36 with 1:33 left in the game. Hanf was joined in double figures by Desiree Wylie with a career high 15 points, Rheanna Egli with 11 points and Laura Patrick with ten. Wylie had nine rebounds and Egli dished nine assists as both narrowly missed double-doubles.
ABOUT THE LOPERS
Nebraska-Kearney is 5-12 on the season and 2-8 in the MIAA. They have lost seven of their last eight games with the one win coming in overtime at Missouri Southern. Shelby Zimmerman is the only Loper in double figures but has not played the last two games and is listed as inactive. Nebraska-Kearney is the only team in the MIAA averaging under 60 points per game.
THE SERIES
The Lady Hornets lead the overall series 23-10, but the two have not met since Dec. 29, 1999. This is just the second trip to the Health & Sports Center. The two were members of the Central States Intercollegiate Conference (CSIC) from 1976-1989. They met six times as non-conference members from 1991-2001.
LAST TIME VS. NEBRASKA-KEARNEY
The #23 Lopers scored their final seven points from the free throw line as they won their 63rd straight home game with a 68-65 win over #5 Emporia State in the Health & Sports Center. Tawanda Barnes hit seven of ten three-pointers and scored 22 points before fouling out to lead the Lady Hornets. All-American Tara Holloway scored 14 points and Mandy Jennings had 12 points for Emporia State. Emily Bloss was held to five points in eight minutes before fouling out. Anny Burdorf led the Lopers with 24 points.
UP NEXT
The Lady Hornets travel to Maryville, Mo. on Saturday to take on Northwest Missouri. Tip-off from Bearcat Arena is set for 1:30 p.m. on February 2.
