Hornets see Lopers equalize with two seconds in regulation

September 28, 2012 - The Emporia State soccer team jumped out to a 2-0 lead at halftime, but Nebraska- Kearney tied the game with two seconds to go in regulation to force overtime, and emerged with a 3-2 victory with a goal five minutes into overtime against the shorthanded Hornets at Cope Stadium in Kearney, Neb.

Emporia State is now 3-5-1, 0-3-1 MIAA. Nebraska- Kearney is now 6-3-1, 1-2-1 MIAA.

The Hornets struck twice in the first half, both off corner kicks. An Elizabeth High header from a Mindi Lozenski corner gave Emporia State the lead at the 3:38 mark. High is Emporia State’s top goal scorer with three goals.  

Emporia State found itself ahead 2-0 moments before the half time whistle. Shannon Thomas latched onto a Hannah Carlson corner kick from three yards for her first goal as a Hornet.

Emporia State made good use of its first half shots. Both attempts on goal found the back of the net.

Nebraska- Kearney pressed for a goal in the second half and cut the lead in half through a breakaway goal by Ashtin Pawloski in the 54th minute. The Lopers out shot the Hornets 8-0 second half, and forcing goalkeeper Nikki Schmitz into making two saves.

Emporia State faced a challenge after Ashleigh Harris picked up two yellow cards and the Hornets found themselves shorthanded with seven minutes to play in regulation. UNK’s Kristyn Otter scored with two seconds on the clock to send the game to overtime.

Five minutes into overtime, McKinzie Rieber found Becka Talbott, whose 20 yard shot from the top of the box beat Schmitz to win the game for the Lopers.

Emporia State resumes play against Fort Hays State on Sunday at FHSU Soccer Stadium in Hays, Kan. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
