HORNETS FINISH WEEK VERSUS CHAMPS
The Emporia State soccer team completes a busy week with a trip to defending MIAA champion Central Missouri Saturday in Warrensburg, Mo.
THE COACHES
Bryan Sailer is 6-12-6 in his second season at Emporia State. Prior to coming to ESU he led Barton County Community College to a 59-23-2 overall record in four seasons. He led them to the KJCAA Championships during the 2008 season. During his four years, the Cougars broke records for the most goals in a game and season as well as nearly every individual mark.
Lewis Theobold is in his sixth season as head coach of Central Missouri. His career record is 83-16-10.
LAST TIME OUT
Emporia State and Southwest Baptist played Thursday to a 0-0 tie in Bolivar, Mo. in the first overtime game for the Hornets this season. The Hornets registered 13 shots, with seven on target. Mallory Walden led the team with two shots on goal. Nikki Schmitz made four saves to earn the shutout. Jordan Foutch, Elizabeth High, and Mindi Lozenski scored in the first half as Emporia State defeated Northwestern Oklahoma State 4-0 on Tuesday. Mallory Walden scored in the 52nd minute to complete the scoring for the Hornets.
LAST SEASON VS CENTRAL MISSOURI
Emporia State tied the single game record for saves with 18, last set in 2001, in a 1-0 loss to #12 Central Missouri in Emporia on Oct. 9. ESU stopped 18 of 19 shots from an UCM offense which had only been held to one goal or less twice all season. Central Missouri would earn their tally in the 85th minute on a goal by Alyssa Rhodes. Nikki Schmitz stopped 16 shots on the afternoon tieing a record set by Megan Martin (twice) during the 2007 season.
SERIES HISTORY
Central Missouri leads the all-time series with Emporia State 3-17-1, and have won every meeting since 2005. In 2004, the Hornets made two trips to Warrensburg coming away with a 3-1 win and 0-0 tie. This is the only matchup this season.
SCOUTING THE JENNIES
Central Missouri hosted Washburn on Thursday and emerged with a 3-1 win, despite giving up the first goal. Becky Lackey leads the Jennies with four goals and points with nine. Central Missouri has outshot opponents 86-51 and recorded 53 shots on goal. Goalkeepers Jessica Grindstaff and Morgan Hurtzler have combined for a 0.62 goals against average. The Jennies were the picked to repeat as MIAA champions in the preseason poll.
YOU'LL GET NOTHING AND LIKE IT
The Hornets’ have not conceded a goal in the past 283 minutes, and have recorded back-to-back shutouts for the first time defeating Washburn and tieing Lindenwood last September. In that span, the Hornets’ defense has held opponents to 13 shots on goal.
MANY NAMES ON THE SCORE SHEET
Nine different players have earned points for the Hornets this season and there is a three way tie for team lead with four points. Mindi Lozenski and Elizabeth High with two goals apiece share the lead with Jordan Foutch, who has one goal and two assists. Tommi Bouknight earned her first point for the Hornets with an assist on Lozenski’s goal at Northwestern Oklahoma State, as did Perri Mulder who assisted on Mallory Walden’s goal in the 4-0 rout.
