HORNETS SET FOR A PAIR OF ROAD GAMES
Emporia State soccer plays two games this week, both on the road. The Hornets venture to Alva, Okla. to face Northwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday. On Thursday, the Hornets make their way to Bolivar, Mo. to take on MIAA foe Southwest Baptist.
LAST TIME OUT
Nikki Schmitz made three saves as Emporia State lost the Turnpike Tussle at Washburn 1-0. The Hornets managed four shots, two on goal, credited to Elizabeth High and Mindi Lozenski. Jordan Foutch and Mallory Walden were responsible for the other two Emporia State shots. Foutch and Perri Mulder were handed their first starts of the season in midfield. The lone goal of the game was scored by Washburn’s Tia Stovall in the sixth minute.
THE COACHES?
Bryan Sailer is 5-13-5 in his second season at Emporia State. Prior to coming to ESU he led Barton County Community College to a 59-23-2 overall record in four seasons. He led them to the KJCAA Championships during the 2008 season.
Kasey Mahaffey is in her first season in charge of Northwestern Oklahoma State and has a career record of 0-6.
Rob Podeyn is in his fourth season with Southwest Baptist with a career record of 21-38-8.
SERIES HISTORY
This is the first meeting between Emporia State and Northwestern Oklahoma State.
This is the 20th meeting between Emporia State and Southwest Baptist. The Bearcats have a 14-4-1 lead over the Hornets all-time. Emporia State has won the last two meetings in Bolivar.
LAST TIME VS. SOUTHWEST BAPTIST
The Hornets came away with a 3-0 win on Oct. 13 in Bolivar. Jordan Foutch scored the game winning goal 3:56 into the game, as Emporia State held a 3-0 lead by the 13th minute with Caitie Hyde and Sarah Anderson also scoring for the Hornets. Nikki Schmitz made 12 saves in the match, with nine of them coming in the first half.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Northwestern Oklahoma State lost its last game 3-0 at Northeastern State. Rangers goalkeeper Caitlin Thorpe made 17 saves in the game, which saw the Rangers outshot 30-4. The Rangers have scored two goals on the season, courtesy of Taylor Marsh and Kaitlyn O’Toole, both coming in a 3-2 defeat versus Sterling.
Southwest Baptist lost its previous outing at Fort Hays State 3-0. Goalkeeper Megan Link was forced into eight saves as Fort Hays State had an 11-1 advantage in shots on goal. Karla Jamison leads the Bearcats with two goals while Ashley Creason leads the team in assists with three. Link has a 0.80 goals against average and two shutouts.
GET THE FIRST GOAL
In every game this season, the team that scored the first goal has gone on to win the game. Ashleigh Harris scored the only goal in Emporia State’s shutout over East Central, Sarah Crawford opened the scoring in the Hornets’ 2-1 win over Augustana (S.D.) In Emporia State’s defeats, the opening goal was scored inside the first seven minutes.
SHOTS FROM MIDFIELD
The midfield trio of of Hannah Carlson, Ashleigh Harris, and Mallory Walden have combined for 19 shots, 10 on goal. Walden, who led the Hornets in goals last season, leads all Emporia State midfielders with 10 shots, four on goal.
