August 31, 2012 - Sophomore Katie Deutschmann led the Hornets with nine kills and 16 assists as the Emporia State volleyball team opened its season with a 3-0 win over William Jewell (25-22, 25-21, 25-15) at the Pittsburg State Classic.  

Courtney Haring and Brianna Kaiser added eight kills and three blocks each to a balanced Hornet attack. Meg Schwartz registered two aces and led the team in digs with 19 to lead the defense. Setter Sydney Hartman recorded 23 assists.

Emporia State never trailed in the first or third set while the second set was closely contested with 11 ties and seven lead changes.

The Hornets closed the third set on a 12-5 run, hitting a match high .429.  The Hornets defense held William Jewell to a .040 hitting percentage for the match. Outside hitter Hannah Herndon led the Cardinals with nine kills and two blocks. 

The Hornets are in action later today against Bemidji State, scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
