February 22, 2012-Ebonie Williams hit a jumper from the right baseline with 4.4 seconds left to give #12 Washburn a 53-52 win over #22 Emporia State on Wednesday night in White Auditorium. The game saw four ties and seven lead changes.
Playing in front of a season high 3,735 the Lady Hornets jumped out to a 6-2 lead 1:29 into the game. The Lady Blues took their first lead at 13-12 with 11:53 left in the half. Neither team led by more than five in the first half before
WU took a 32-29 lead into the lockerrooms.
WU pushed the lead to 13 at 47-34 with 11:44 left in the game after a 10-0 run. The Lady Hornets trailed by ten with 6:07 left when Tiara George hit a layup for a 51-41 lead. ESU would then hold WU scoreless for the next 6:03 of the game as the Lady Hornets went on a 12-0 run to take a 52-51 lead on two free throws by Kelsey Balcom with 1:04 left.
Williams missed a jumper with 36 seconds left giving the ball back to ESU. Jocelyn Cummings was fouled with 16 seconds left and missed the front end of a one and one. After a WU timeout, Williams brought the ball down and hit a jumper from just outside the lane with 4.4 seconds left. ESU inbounded the ball to Robben, who drove the court and had her layup roll out as time expired.
Merissa Quick led ESU with 16 points and was joined in double figures by Cummings with 12 points and Robben with 11 points.
The Lady Hornets will wrap up the regular season on Saturday at Ft. Hays State. Tip-off from Gross Coliseum is set for 6 p.m.
