#22 ESU denied a last second attempt

February 1, 2012-The #22 Emporia State Lady Hornets overcame a 15 point first half deficit but were denied on a last second attempt for the win in a 63-62 loss at Central Missouri.
 
The Lady Hornets trailed 28-13 with 4:12 left in the first half before ending the half on an 8-0 run.  The Jennies led 40-34 with 13:29 left when ESU went on an 8-2 run to tie the game at 42 with 11:14 left on Merissa Quick's old fashioned three point play.  There would be seven ties and four lead changes over the final ten minutes.
 
ESU took a three point lead at 60-57 with 2:05 left on Robben's old fashioned three point play.  UCM answered with an old fashioned three by Nicole Caddell with 1:42 remaining.
The Jennies took a 62-60 lead with 50.4 seconds left on a layup by Shaquanda Wiggins. Wiggins hit one of two free throws with 30.2 seconds left.  Robben hit two free throws with 12.9 left to pull ESU within one. Renae Shippy missed two free throws with 9.1 left and Rheanna Egli got the rebound. She gave it off to Jocelyn Cummings who drove the lane and when her shot did not go, Balcom got a rebound and her shot missed as well as time expired.
 
Playing for the first time after missing three games, Balcom led ESU with 19 points and nine rebounds.  She was joined in double figures by Quick with 12 points and Robben with 11 points.
 
The Lady Hornets are back in action on Saturday when they play host to #10 Northeastern State.  Tip-off from White Auditorium is set for 1:30 p.m.
 
NOTES:
Robben set the MIAA record for consecutive made free throws with 41 straight, breaking Nikki Olberding of Washburn's record of 36.
