October 9, 2012-Emporia State Athletics had five representatives selected to attend the NCAA Career in Sports Forum Oct 5-7 in Kansas City, Mo. The event is an initiative for student-athletes to learn and explore skills that will assist in the transition to a career in sports.
Among the nearly 300 participants were Hornet baseball player Dalton Piecukonis, men’s basketball player Brent Schuck and track and field student-athletes Nikki Wetstein, Mikhail Roedel and Lindsey Kunkel.
The NCAA Career in Sports Forum is a three-day event through which selected student-athletes explore and are educated on careers in sports, with a primary focus on intercollegiate athletics. The participants were given an educational opportunity to learn and gain valuable exposure to careers in sports, specifically in the areas of the overall structure, divisional focus and services provided by the NCAA; defining yourself through branding, goal setting and communication; social vs. professional and effective verses ineffective networking; business etiquette; and the next step in their careers through advanced degrees, interviewing, resumes and job pusuit.
“The forum was very informative,” said Schuck, a forward that transferred to Emporia State from Cowley CC. “We had current professionals giving practical approaches to developing skills and building a network necessary to a career with the NCAA."
The NCAA Career in Sports Forum is held annually and allows student athletes an opportunity to explore careers in sports, sports entertainment and sports law, coaching, administration and officiating.
