October 5, 2012 – The Emporia State soccer team fell in a close contest to Northwest Missouri 1-0 after Taylor Sellars scored on a long-range shot in the 80th minute at ESU Pitch in Emporia, Kan.

Melanie Nuessen got the start in goal for the Hornets and made four saves. Katie Wolfe, Mindi Lozenski, Tommi Bouknight, and Shannon Thomas all had shots on goal for the Hornets. Mallory Walden led the Hornets with three shots.

Both teams had a fair share of possession and created opportunities, as each side had 10 shots. Emporia State had a 6-5 advantage in the first half, while Northwest Missouri had a 5-4 advantage in the second half.

The goal came after Northwest Missouri earned a corner kick from the right. After the Hornets cleared the initial threat, the ball fell to Sellars about 35 yards out. Her shot arced over the players retreating from the penalty box and sailed into the net.

Emporia State is now 3-7-1, 0-5-1 MIAA. Northwest Missouri is now 6-3-2, 4-1-1 MIAA.

The Hornets welcome Missouri Western to ESU Pitch on Sunday, with kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m.
