IT’S GOOD TO BE HOME
The Emporia State soccer team returns home to play MIAA opponents Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western at ESU Pitch this weekend.
LAST TIME OUT
Nikki Schmitz made five saves in the Hornets’ 2-0 defeat at Fort Hays State. The game was scoreless at half time and each team had two shots on goal. Shannon Thomas’ effort in the fifth minute forced a save and the other shot on goal came in the 27th minute courtesy of forward Jordan Foutch. Sade Humphrey and Ember Alberton scored second half goals for the Tigers.
Elizabeth High and Shannon Thomas scored first half goals for the Hornets, but Nebraska-Kearney emerged with a 3-2 overtime victory after tieing the score at 2-2 with two seconds remaining in the second half. Hannah Carlson and Mindi Lozenski had an assist each.
THE COACHES?
Bryan Sailer is 6-16-6 in his second season at Emporia State. Prior to coming to ESU he led Barton County Community College to a 59-23-2 overall record in four seasons. He led them to the KJCAA Championships during the 2008 season and was named Jayhawk Conference Coach of the Year after guiding Barton to an 18-4 record.
Tracy Hoza is in her 10th season as head coach of Northwest Missouri with an overall record of 66-92-12.
Chad Edwards is in his second season with Missouri Western with a career record of 7-16-0.

Northwest Missouri leads the all-time series with Emporia State 13-7-2.

LAST TIME VS. OPPONENTS
Emporia State and Northwest Missouri met on Nov. 3 in Kansas City, Mo. at the MIAA Tournament, which the Bearcats won 4-2. Sarah Anderson and Jessica Decker scored second half goals for the Hornets.
Mallory Walden scored both goals in Emporia State’s 2-0 win over Missouri Western in St. Joseph, Mo. on Oct. 29. Nikki Schmitz made five saves to earn her fifth shutout.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Northwest Missouri tied then #18 Central Oklahoma 1-1 in 2OT last Saturday at home. Victoria Von Mende leads the Bearcats in scoring with seven goals and 15 points on the season. She scored three times against the Hornets last season. Goalkeeper Kelsey Adams has a 1.59 goals against average and two shutouts.
Missouri Western lost 3-1 to Northeastern State last Saturday at home. Katie Kempf is the Griffons top scorer with four goals, two assists and 10 points. Goalkeeper Kelly Voigts has posted a 1.21 goals against average while making 54 saves. The Griffons are forcing 8.7 shots per game and allowing 17.4.
SHARE THE WEALTH
By scoring in the first half against Nebraska- Kearney, Shannon Thomas became the seventh Hornet to score this season, and the first defender to score since Jessica Decker found the net in the MIAA Tournament against Northwest Missouri on Nov. 2 of last year. Ten different Hornets have points this season, led by Elizabeth High with six (three goals).
STONG STARTERS
Emporia State has outscored opponents 7-4 in the first half this season. The Hornets have also out shot opponents 59-46 with 30 shots on goal. The Hornets have a habit of scoring in the minutes leading up to halftime, with four of their seven goals coming in the final 15 minutes of the first half.
