The #18 Emporia State football team moved to 8-0 on the season thanks to a record setting performance by Tyler Eckenrode in a 52-26 win at Truman on Saturday afternoon. The senior quarterback was 26 of 39 for 422 yards and three touchdowns and became the Hornets all-time leader in career passing yards and single season total offense.
Truman got off to a good start and became the first team this season to score in the first quarter on the Emporia State defense. Garrett White scored on an 11 yard run to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead with 8:01 left in the opening quarter. The Hornets answered with a 43 yard field goal on the next possession to pull within 7-3 with 5:56 left in the quarter.
Emporia State took their first lead of the day with an 81 yard pass from Eckenrode to Shjuan Richardson with 3:35 left in the quarter for a 10-7 lead. Truman tied it up with a 29 yard field goal with 1:16 left. The Bulldogs retook the lead with a safety when the snap from center went out of the endzone on a punt on the first play of the second quarter.
The Hornets then scored the next 28 points to take a commanding 38-12 lead. It started with a 15 yard run by Dozie Iwaugwa with 11:14 left in the second. Derek Lohmann then intercepted his school record 15
th career pass to set up an Eckenrode to Ray Ray Davis 19 yard touchdown with 10:54 remaining in the half. The Hornets ended the scoring in the first half with another Iwaugwa touchdown, this one from one yard out with 40.6 seconds left in the half.
Truman had the ball to open the third quarter and Ben Carlson intercepted a Conrad Schottel pass on the third play from scrimmage and returned it to the Bulldog ten yard line. Three plays later Derwin Hall scored from the one yard line to give the Hornets a 38-12 lead with 13:50 left in the third quarter.
After a short punt by the Hornets set up Truman at the Hornet 28 yard line, Taylor Breen came in at quarterback for Truman. He scored on a 15 yard scramble to pull TSU within 38-19 with 7:18 left in the third quarter. Emporia State answered with a four play, 75 yard drive that included a 36 yard pass from Eckenrode to Richardson and a 38 yard touchdown pass to Davis with 5:17 left in the third.
Truman drove down the field and had first and goal at the Emporia State six at the end of the quarter. Carlson had tackles on first and second down to put the Bulldogs at third and goal from the four to start the fourth quarter. Jeff Richards then broke up a pass in the endzone and Kadeem Satchell sacked Breen for a loss of four on fourth down to give the Hornets the ball back.
Emporia State then rushed the ball on five of six plays, highlighted by a career long 52 yard run by Trent Davis, before Iwaugwa scored his third touchdown of the game with a 15 yard run. Truman got the final score of the game on a five yard pass from Breen to Chico Orlando with 6:31 left in the game for the final score of 52-26.
The Hornets ended the game with 61 yards of total offense. In addition to Eckenrode’s 422 yard passing, Iwaugwa ended with 79 yards on 14 carries and Davis had 75 yards on seven carries. Richardson had 11 catches for 217 yards and a touchdown, his second 200 yard performance of the season. Davis added 121 yards on five catches and two touchdowns. It was the first time since 2005 Emporia State had two players with 100 yards receiving in the same game.
Defensively Carlson had 17 tackles with one for a loss and the 41 yard interception return. He was joined in double figure tackles by Jordan Sanders with ten. Gabe Patterson and Jeff Richards joined Carlson and Lohmann with interceptions.
The win sets up the biggest game in Jones Field at Welch Stadium history on Thursday as #16 Missouri Western comes to Emporia. The Griffons defeated #7 Pittsburg State 63-14 on Saturday. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m. and will be televised on the MIAA Network. It will be the first televised game between two ranked teams in Welch Stadium history.

Eckenrode now has 6,807 passing yards to pass Tad Hatfield’s career mark of 6,697 set from 2001-04.
Eckenrode now has 3,287 total yards this season to pass Hatfield’s mark of 2,943 set in 2004.
Richardson is now sixth in single season receiving yards with 973.
Emporia State is 8-0 for the first time since opening the 1988 season with the same 8-0 mark.
