January 7, 2012 --The Emporia State men's basketball team shot .490 from the field but could not overcome a strong performance from the line in a 75-68 loss to Pittsburg State. The Hornets made only nine free throws while the Gorillas hit 24 of 29 from the charity stripe.
Pittsburg State jumped on top early leading by as much as 11 in the first half and taking a 36-26 edge into the break. The Hornets recovered in the second half for the second straight game, they would tie the game at 55-55 in the second half and would take their only lead of the second half at the 5:42 mark when they led 60-59. The Hornets would turn the ball over three times in the final two minutes though as PSU pulled out the win.
Tola Lawal led the Hornets with 24 points, scoring 16 of his points as ESU made their second half comeback. Chris Sights added three points for the Hornets going two of two from behind the three-point line. Both Troy Pierce and Taylor Euler added 11 points while Euler led the team with six rebounds.
The Hornets will return to action on Jan. 11 when they face Lincoln for a scheduled 7:30 p.m. tip-off from W. L. White Auditorium.
