January 28, 2012 -- The Emporia State men's basketball team got outscored 20-13 in overtime by Truman State in a 77-70 loss on the road. The game saw a combined 54 fouls which is the second most in the MIAA this season.
The Hornets jumped out to a 6-2 early lead and stayed even with the Bulldogs for much of the first half. The Bulldogs heated up shooting the ball late in the period and took a 29-20 lead into halftime.
Truman would push their lead to 31-20 in the second half before ESU responded with an 8-0 run and cut the lead to 31-28. ESU would then score 8 of the next 11 points to take a 36-32 advantage. The Hornets would push their lead to five points three different times in the second half. Truman would regain the lead however taking a 57-54 lead with under a minute remaining. Chris Simmons and Chris Sights would add free throws for ESU to force the overtime session.
The Bulldogs would score the first three points of the extra session and would not look back as they outscored ESU 20-13 in OT.
Tola Lawal led the way for the Hornets scoring 15 points while Antonio DiMaria finished with 13 points and six rebounds. Chris Sights added ten points and four assists for the Hornets. Justiin Ikhide had nine points and six rebounds while Taylor Euler added a team high six assists.
ESU will return to the floor on Feb. 1 when they travel to Central Missouri. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. from Warrensburg, Mo.
