January 14, 2011-The #18 Emporia State Lady Hornets cut a 15 point deficit down to five with 38 seconds left but couldn't finish the comeback in a 73-66 loss to #17 Washburn. The Lady Blues converted seven of ten free throws in the final 1:06 to ice the win.
WU used a 9-4 run midway through the first half to turn a two point game into a seven point advantage with 8:01 left in the first half. Laura Kinderknecht hit a running layup as the buzzer sounded to send the Lady Blues to the locker room with a 36-27 lead.
ESU would hit just one field goal over the first 8:18 of the second half but were able to stay within range thanks to a nine of 11 effort from the free throw line. Rachel Hanf's three pulled the Lady Hornets to within 49-41 with 11:42 left. The Lady Blues then went on a 10-3 run to take their biggest lead of the night at 59-44 with 7:54 left.
A 20-10 run by ESU, that included 14 points from Heather Robben, would cut the WU lead to 69-64 with 36.9 seconds remaining. The Lady Blues would hit three shots with under five seconds left on the shot clock in the final five minutes.
Robben led ESU with 27 points but Kelsey Balcom was the only other Lady Hornet in double figures with 11 points.
The Lady Hornets are back in action on Wednesday, January 18 when they take on Ft. Hays State. The final game of the first round of MIAA action is set to tip at 5:30 p.m. in White Auditorium.
NOTES:
The WU win snapped a two game ESU winning streak and was the first win by the home team since 2009.
