October 6, 2011 -- The Emporia State soccer team got two goals and had 17 shots in the second period, but could not overcome three Fort Hays State first half goals in a 3-2 loss. ESU outshot FHSU 20-13 and 12-6 on goal as it was the second straight homegame in which ESU outshot their opponent.
FHSU got on the board first when Becca Andres took the richochet of the ESU post and headed it in for the 1-0 lead in the 27th minute. Cindy Benitez scored the second Tiger goal in the 31st minute as she scored off the rebound of a Becca Andres shot. Hailey Davey scored the third goal off a pass from Margaret Meier.
In the second half ESU got on the board in the 49th minute as Ashley Hill scored an unassisted goal to cut the FHSU lead to two. In the 84th minute Jessica Decker took a corner kick from Mallory Walden and netted ESU's second goal.
Walden finished with five shots for the Hornets, four of which came on frame. Natalie Hoernig made three saves in goal for ESU.
The Hornets will return to the pitch on Sunday, Oct. 9 when the face Central Missouri at 1 p.m.
