September 2, 2011 -- The Emporia State soccer team needed 88 minutes to do it, but they earned a 1-1 tie with Southwestern Oklahoma in their season opener at the MIAA/GAC Challenge in Ada, Okla. The Hornets were outshot 14-11 overall, but got ten shots on goal for the first time since their 2009 season finale against Missouri Southern.
The Bulldogs struck first in the 18th minute as Kelsey Visor put them up 1-0. ESU would answer in the 88th minute as Jessica Decker set up a Mallory Walden goal. Natalie Hoernig held the Bulldogs scoreless for the final 20 minutes of overtime to help ESU earn the tie as she finished with seven saves on the day.
Mallory Walden led the team with three shots on goal, while Catie Hyde and Karson Wilson each added two shots on goal.
The Hornets will face host East Central on Sept. 4 at 2:30 p.m. from Ada, Okla.
