Robben scores 19 in ESU win

November 7, 2011-Heather Robben scored 19 points on her birthday to lead four Lady Hornets in double figures as Emporia State defeated Evangel 92-52 in exhibition play in White Auditorium. Three others scored nine points each as 11 of 12 Lady Hornets that played scored.

The game started out fairly even with three ties in the first seven minutes before ESU went on a 14-4 run to take a ten point lead at 22-12. Seven different Lady Hornets scored during the run that was capped by a three-pointer from Robben with 8:25 left in the half. ESU would score the final seven points of the half to lead 41-25 as they went to the locker room.

Robben would score the first eight points of a 13-0 lead to give the Lady Hornets a 57-30 lead with 14:48 left in the game. The lead woould grow to 40 points on three occassions in the second half.

The Lady Hornets forced 28 turnovers and held the Crusaders to just .353 shooting for the game. ESU had 18 steals and shot .429 from the field for the game, including .538 in the second half.

Robben had four steals and three rebounds to go with her game high 19 points. She was joined in double figures by Rachel Hanf with 12 points and Jocelyn Cummings and Kathryn Flott with ten each. Kelsey Balcom, Merissa Quick and Rheanna Egli all added nine points for the Lady Hornets. Balcom had a team and game high 11 rebounds and five assists for ESU.

Evangel, who is ranked #22 in the NAIA Division I Preseason National Poll, was led by Emily Akins with 12 points.

 

The Lady Hornets will open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 11 at Newman. Tip-off from Fugate Gymnasium in Wichita, Kan. is set for 5:30 p.m.
