Hornets lose 83-61 at Kansas

November 2, 2011-The Emporia State Lady Hornets out-rebounded Kansas 39-38 on the evening but gave up 27 points off turnovers in an 83-61 loss in Allen Fieldhouse. 

Kelsey Balcom led a balanced ESU offense with ten points and seven rebounds as ten of 11 Lady Hornets scored.  Jocelyn Cummings and Heather Robben each scored nine points and Merissa Quick added eight points, nine rebounds and two blocks.

ESU led 4-3 on a put back by Quick with 17:43 left in the first half and the score was tied at 6-6 with 16:00 left in the half.  KU then went on a 9-1 run to go up 15-7 with 14:00 left with seven of the nine coming from the combo of Carolyn Davis and Angel Goodrich.  The lead would grow to 24 at 41-17 with 5:11 left in the half. ESU closed the half on a 7-2 run of their own to go to the locker room down 43-24.

The Jayhawks built their lead to 31 points at 74-43 before the Lady Hornets went on an 18-9 run over the final 7:55 of the game.  ESU was outscored by just three in the second half, 40-37, by the Big 12 opponent.

For the game ESU shot .396 from the field and .400 from behind the three point stripe.  KU shot .456 from the field and .250 from behind the arc.  The Lady Hornets were 13 of 18 (.722) from the free throw line while the Jayhawks went 19 of 27 (.704) from the line.  ESU had 27 turnovers that led to 27 points for KU while the Jayhawks turned the ball over 12 times leading to eight Lady Hornet points.

The Lady Hornets are back in action on Monday, November 7 when they play host to Evangel.  Tip-off for the exhibition game is set for 7 p.m. in White Auditorium.
