Carly Spicer is in her third year as the assistant with Emporia State volleyball team, but is no stranger to the Hornets or success on the bench. This is Spicer’s ninth year at Emporia State University. She spent four years as a player, two as the graduate assistant, and this will be her third year as the assistant coach for the Hornets. She current coaches and teaches PE117 Volleyball and PE 355 Theory of Coaching Volleyball at ESU. Spicer’s main duty for the team is working with outside/right side hitters and defensive specialists.
An Osage City, Kansas native, Spicer was a first-team All-MIAA selection at outside hitter as a senior for the Hornets. She was also an Honorable Mention All-MIAA selection as a junior and sophomore at Emporia State. Academically, Spicer as a four time AVCA All-Academic team and on the Dean’s and Athletic Director honor roll.
She finished fourth in the MIAA in kills at 3.66 kills per set as a senior for the Hornets in 2014. Â She had a career high 22 kills on a .426 hitting percentage and 24 digs in four sets against Central Oklahoma. Â She ended her four year career at Emporia State with 989 kills and as team captain.
For a season in 2015, Spicer was the head volleyball coach at Emporia HS.  At EHS she led the Spartans to their first state tournament appearance since 2007 with a 32-10 record. Their 32-10 record was the best finish the Spartans had had in 14 years and Spicer was named Centennial League Coach of the Year.  Six of the players Spicer coached at EHS ended up becoming volleyball players in the MIAA. Three of those players now play at Emporia State University.
Spicer earned her Bachelors of Science of Education with an Elementary degree and Middle School Math Endorsement from Emporia State University in December 2015. She also earned her Master of Science degree through Health, Physical Education, and Recreation from Emporia State in December 2017. Carly Spicer is the daughter of Bill and Jeri Spicer.
