Bing Xu

Bing Xu completed his 14th year as head coach at Emporia State in 2018. Xu is 281-169 in his 14 years at ESU and 145-102 in the MIAA. Xu has led the Hornets to five NCAA Tournaments during his time at Emporia State.
In 2018, the Hornets finished with an overall record of 14-18 and 8-10 in the MIAA.  The team made their sixth trip to the MIAA tournament in seven seasons that the MIAA has held a tournament.  The Hornets had five players earn All-MIAA honors, senior Tatum Graves earned first-team, sophomore Yuchen Du earned second team, and juniors Emma Dixon, Allie Maloney, and Taylor Otting earned honorable mention.  The team earned their eighth AVAC Academic Award while under Xu’s reign. One highlight of the 2018 season was defeating two nationally ranked teams.  At the beginning of the season, the Hornets defeated undefeated Rockhurst University in a five set win when they were ranked #5 in the nation and at the end of the season, the Hornets defeated University of Central Oklahoma in a five set win when they were #17 in the nation.

The Hornets finished the 2017 season with an overall record of 15-17, 6-12 in the MIAA and their fifth trip to the MIAA Tournament in six seasons that the MIAA has held the tournament.  The Hornets had 3 players earn All-MIAA honors, junior Tatum Graves and freshman Yuchen Du were named second-team and junior Jamie Hauptman earned honorable mention.

In 2016, the Hornets finished the season with an overall record of 15-18 and a conference record of 7-11.  The Hornets graduated five seniors in the class of 2017, four of which were four year players with Xu.
 
In 2015, Xu led the Hornets to the MIAA Tournament for the third time in his career, the fourth time the MIAA has had the tournament in his 11 years. The Hornet went 11-18, 6-12 in the MIAA. Shayla Cotman earned a spot on second team All-MIAA as a middle blocker. Josie Williams was on the honorable mention All-MIAA list as an outside hitter.
 
In 2014, Emporia State finished the season with a 15-12 record, 11-11 in the MIAA. With no MIAA Tournament in 2014, the Hornets did not continue into any post season play but did end the season with a win against Fort Hays. Carly Spicer led the team, earning First Team All-MIAA honors as an outside hitter. Courtney Haring was Second Team All-MIAA as a middle blocker, joined by her counterpart Shayla Cotman on honorable mention at middle blocker. Also making honorable mentioned was Katie Deutschmann, outside hitter, Josie Williams, outside hitter, Kimberly Bell, setter, and Sydney Hartman, setter.
 
In 2013, the Hornets went 18-11, 9-7 in the MIAA, making the MIAA Tournament for the second year in a row. Number five seeded Emporia State lost out in the first round to number four seeded Central Oklahoma. Paige Vanderpool became just the fifth Hornet to earn all-conference honors all four years of her career. Vanderpool was named to Second Team All-MIAA as an outside hitter to lead seven Hornets on the all-conference team. Hornets making honorable mention were Carly Spicer, middle blocker, Courtney Haring, middle blocker, Kelly Holden, libero, Brianna Kaiser, outside hitter, Katie Deutschmann, right side, and Macki Pankratz, setter.
 
In 2012, Xu led Emporia State to a 20-12 record, 9-8 in the MIAA, his sixth 20 win season and the MIAA Tournament for the first time. The MIAA had not held a tournament since his first year at Emporia State in 2005. The Hornets lost to number two seeded Nebraska-Kearney in the semi-finals. Paige Vanderpool and Meg Schwartz were named to Second Team All-MIAA while Carly Spicer, Courtney Haring, Katie Deutschmann and Brianna Kaiser earned honorable mention.
 
In 2011, the Hornets failed to make the NCAA Tournament for the first time in four years despite his fifth 20 win season. Katie Deutschmann won MIAA Freshman of the Year honors for the Hornets.
 
In 2010, the Hornets made their fourth straight regional tournament appearance. Brittney Miller earned MIAA Player of the Year honors on her way to All-American honors.
 
In 2009, he led the Hornets to their third straight national tournament berth with the second highest win total in school history. Arica Shepard earned second team AVCA All-America honors. 

In the 2008 season, Xu led the Hornets to their first MIAA Championship and their first NCAA South Central Regional Championship match in White Auditorium. He was named the MIAA Coach of the Year as ESU won 19 in a row at one point as they finished 34-4. Arica Shepard and Ting Liu were both named All-Americans. Liu was named the MIAA Player of the Year. 
 
In 2008, ESU finished second nationally in attendance average drawing 936 fans per match to White Auditorium. They also had the highest attendance in all of Division II last year when 2,432 fans came to watch the Hornets 3-0 win over Washburn. 
 
In the 2007 season, Xu led the Hornets to their second NCAA Division II Tournament in three years. The Hornets finished the season ranked 15th in the AVCA Poll and had Shepard named to the All-American team while Liu was named region and conference Freshman of the Year.
 
In 2006, the Hornets went 15-16, 7-6 in the MIAA.
 
He had a successful inaugural season in 2005, which the Hornets went 24-8 and advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time in school history. 
 
While Xu has been head coach, ESU has been an AVCA All-Academic team nine out of his 11 seasons. 
 
Xu came to ESU after earning a bachelor’s of science degree in business administration from Columbia College and a master’s degree in business from Palm Beach Atlantic University. While attending college he also served as the assistant coach for the women’s teams both at Palm Beach Atlantic and Columbia. Xu was a member of the men’s team at Columbia College for four years.
 
His coaching experience does not stop in the U.S., Xu has also been a member or a coach of several teams in China. 
 
Xu is married to the Hornets’ assistant coach, Jiangping Wang. The couple has two daughters Grace and Jade.
