Goeckel is a graduate of Council Grove HS where he was the class valedictorian. A member of the National Honor Society, Goeckel was a Kansas Honor Scholar, a Kansas Governor's Scholar, and was Topeka Capital Journal All-State Academic. Goeckel holds the school record for cross country. Goeckel is a multiple time All-Flint Hills League for both track and cross country.

At ESU
2019-20: Goeckel sat the 2018 season out while he was at the University of Wyoming but joins the Hornets looking to improve upon his marks from high school. Goeckel will develop into a reliable athlete the Hornets can turn to for anything. Goeckel's best performance came at the Bearcat open where he ran a personal best of 1:58.68 over 800 meters. Goeckel also went on to help the distance medley relay team place 7th at the MIAA Indoor Championships. His outdoor season was canceled due to COVID-19.
2020-21: Goeckel has battled an injury all season long but has managed to run a season best of 2:00.56 for 800 meters at the ESU Relays. A week later at the Wichita State Open, he set a PR in the 1500 meters by running 4:27.18.
