Matt Walter begins his sixth season as ESU’s Strength and Conditioning Coach and his fourth as Offensive Coordinator. His primary coaching position will be the offensive line.

Last year Emporia State ranked 15th in the nation in scoring offense and 20th in the nation in total offense.  Quarterback Brent Wilson was ranked sixth in the nation in passing efficiency and seventh in touchdown passes for the Hornets.


In 2012 the Hornets led the MIAA and were ranked tenth in the nation in passing offense and were third in the MIAA and 25th in the nation in total offense.  Emporia State scored over 40 points in six games last season, reaching 50 on three occassions.

He had his first first-team All-MIAA performer last year in freshman Jarrett Stastny and has twice had players earn second-team All-MIAA. A total of eight Hornet offensive linemen have earned All-MIAA honors in the last five years.

In his first season ESU ranked fourth in the MIAA in rushing offense, despite not having a running back in the top ten of the league’s rushing stats. Two of his players earned honorable mention All-MIAA status.

Walter spent the four previous seasons as the head strength and conditioning coach for the New Mexico State football team. Known to his athletes as ‘The Punisher’ for his grueling strength, speed and agility training, Walter guided the Aggies to break numerous school records in lifting, running and jumping. He also implemented a nutrition supplement program as well as the Lifter of the Year Award, given to the most outstanding achiever during the Aggies’ off-season program. Walter is also recognized as a National Speed & Explosion Association certified coach. Walter previously served as the head strength and conditioning coach at Southeastern Louisiana for one year. Prior to that, Walter spent one year at Louisiana Tech as an assistant strength and conditioning coach.

As a running back for coach Higgins at Northwest Oklahoma, Walter was named a 2000 NAIA Honorable Mention All-American as his squad finished as national runners-up. In 1999, Walter helped his team capture the NAIA National Title posting a 13-0 record.

Walter has two sons, Rowan and Torin.
