Emporia State Volleyball Sweeps Midweek Match at Newman

Hornets hit .268 on the night to take down Jets in three

September 8, 2026 - Emporia State volleyball swept Newman on Tuesday night in Wichita in nonconference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set one was back and forth early between the Hornets and the Jets, with Emporia State eventually leading 11-8. However, Newman rallied to score nine of the next ten, taking a 17-12 advantage over the Hornets. Emporia State eventually found their footing again, climbing back to tie the match 20-20 before pulling in front late to take set one 25-23.

The late momentum that the Hornets found in the first frame carried over into the second, as they jumped out to a 9-4 lead over the Jets. The Hornets extended their edge to as much as 13-5 in the set, but Newman found a rhythm and climbed back, cutting the Emporia State lead down to 16-14. Despite the run by the Jets, Emporia State scored four of the next five to force a Newman timeout, and then carried that through the remainder of set two, winning the frame 25-18.

Newman held the slight edge throughout the first half of set three, as the Jets led 14-11 midway through the frame, forcing the Hornets to call timeout. Out of the break, Emporia State scored four of five to tie the set and force a timeout by the Jets. The Hornets continued the momentum after the timeout, as they eventually pulled away for a 25-21 set three win to complete the sweep.
