NONCON AT NEWMAN
Emporia State travels to Wichita for a nonconference matchup against Newman on Tuesday night, as they take on the Jets between their nonconference tournament slate.
LAST MATCH VS. THE JETS
In early October last season, the Hornets were in Wichita and rolled past the jets in straight sets. Emma Klett had 19 kills while Brailee Bogle and Delainee Dexter combined for 37 assists.
LAST TIME OUT
The Hornets traveled north to Sioux Falls, and put together a 4-0 trip which included a pair of five-set wins over hosts Sioux Falls and Augustana. Emporia State trailed both USF and Augie 2-1 in both matches before rallying to pick up the road wins. Against the Vikings on Friday, the Hornets trailed 11-6 in set five and eventually withstood two match points to complete the comeback. On the trip, Piper Bahr, Lavra Krizanic and Delainee Dexter all averaged more than two kills per set, with Bahr averaging 3.06 which included 20 kills in the opener against Sioux Falls.
ABOUT THE COACHES
Ken Murczek is in his fourth season at Emporia State and has a 58-34 record through the first three years. Prior to Murczek's arrival in 2023, the Hornets last made a trip to the MIAA Tournament in 2018, and have made the trip in each of the first three seasons of his tenure.
Tori Provencio is in her first season as the head coach at Newman and is 3-5 to begin the season. Prior to Newman, Provencio spent 11 seasons coaching the Jayhawk Conference and both Butler and Hutch.
ABOUT THE HORNETS
Emporia State is coming off a 21-7 record last season, and have started the 2026 campaign 7-1. 2025 marked their first 20-plus win season since 2012 and the Hornets are receiving votes in the AVCA Preseason Poll for the first time since the beginning of that 2012 campaign. Through the first two weeks, Lavra Krizanic and Piper Bahr have 79 and 75 kills respectively and are both averaging just shy of three kills per set. Delainee Dexter has also tallied 62 kills at 2.14 per set so far this season. In the middle, Mia Frisbe and Brooklynn Weaver continue to be efficient in attack, hitting .395 and .390 through the first eight matches while also proved 17 and 19 total blocks respectively this season. The Hornet offense is being guided by Brailee Bogle and Delainee Dexter who have combined for 9.56 assists per set. Bogle is up over 200 assists on the season and had a season-high 49 in the Hornets' five-set win over Sioux Falls. She has also moved into the top five in program history in career assists, now with 2,791 in her career. On defense, Miyu Tsurumaki has played all 29 sets at libero and has 110 digs on the young season, While Krizanic, Bogle and Dexter all average two digs per set or more.
SCOUTING THE JETS
Newman is 3-5 to begin the 2026 season after tournaments at both the Drury and Cameron Invitationals. The Jets were unable to pick up a win in Springfield to open the season but responded with a 3-1 trip to Lawton, Okla over the weekend. The attack has been led by Isabella Lamb and Priscilla Raschen who have 67 and 66 kills respectively, while Lamb is hitting .209 so far. Similar to the Hornets, the Jets have deployed two setters as Madalyn Hoot and Charissa Ninan have combined for 8.58 assists per set. Defensively, Reese Daugherty and Reese Johnson have 4.18 and 3.32 digs per set.
SERIES HISTORY
Emporia State has won the last five matches, beginning with the first matchup under Ken Murczek in 2023, with the Hornets dropping just one set in that time frame. Overall, Emporia State leads the all-time series 14-4 over Newman.
