May 2, 2026-Emporia State fell in a pair of one run games to Washburn on Saturday at the Trusler Sports Complex, yet will still earn the #4 seed in next week's MIAA Championship Tournament. The Hornets dropped game one 5-4 in eight innings before falling 7-6 in the nightcap.

WU 5, ESU 4 (8 innings)
The Hornets overcame an early Ichabod lead to go ahead but could not hold on in a 5-4 loss in extra innings in the matinee.
Washburn went up 2-0 on a two run homer by Delaney Anderson in the top of the first but Emporia State responded with three unearned runs in the bottom of the second.
Avery Brewer led off with a single and went to second when
Brynley Smith reached on fielder's choice and a throwing error. Â
Addison Callaway reached on a bunt to lead the bases and Elina Batlett hit a sac fly to score Brewer. With two outs
Taryn Burkhardt singled and went to second on another throwing error that allowed two runs to score to put the Hornets up 3-2.
Brooke Flewelling connected on her 16
th home run of the year with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to give Emporia State a 4-2 lead. With two outs in the top of the seventh a Mackenzie Sais RBI single got the Ichabods within 4-3 and Taylor Brees followed with a RBI single to center to tie the game.Â
Izzy Sloan came on in relief of starter
Morgan Tomlinson and got a strikeout to end the inning.
Bartlett singled and went to second on a sacrifice bunt but could not get any further as the game went to extra innings. Aspen Burgardt led off the Ichabod half of the eighth with a single and went to second on a sacrifice. Taybor Moss followed with an RBI single to give Washburn a 5-4 lead. The Hornets were then retired in order in the bottom of the frame.
Burkhardt went two for four with an RBI while
Brooke Flewelling had a solo home run.Â
Morgan Tomlinson allowed four runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings.
Izzy Sloan took the loss allowing one run on two hits with a strikeout in 1.1 innings pitched.

WU 7, ESU 6
In a back and forth game Emporia State came from three runs down in the fifth to tie the game but could not complete the comeback in a 7-6 loss in the nightcap.
Sydney Wagner got the Hornets on top with her first career homer in the bottom of the third. The next inning
Kinsey Perine hit a sac fly that scored
Leslie Ramos to make it 2-0 as
Elina Bartlett, who had reached on a throwing error, advanced to third on the play. With two outs Wagner reached on a fielding error at short as Bartlett came home to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead.
Washburn would explode for six runs on six hits in the fifth inning. Three of the first four Ichabods reached on singles to load the bases when
Chloe Wilson came on in relief of starter
Hannah Butterbaugh. Madi Moore was then hit by a pitch to drive in a run and Katie Ediger singled to make it 2-0 and load the bases. Danielle Schlader then hit a pinch hit double to give WU a 4-3 lead and force another pitching change for the Hornets.
Morgan Tomlinson relieved Wilson and got a ground ball to second.
Brynley Smith threw home and Ediger was originally called out but after a challenge by WU the call was overturned and the Ichabods took a 5-3 lead. Taylor Brees followed with an RBI single to left to make it 6-3. Delaney Anderson was called out for interference when she ran into Tomlinson trying to field a bunt in front of the plate, but collision led to Tomlinson being replaced by
Izzy Sloan who got ground ball out to end the inning.
Emporia State would battle back and tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. Back to back walks by
Avery Brewer and
Brynley Smith started the inning and a sac bunt put runners at second and third.
Leslie Ramos then delivered a two run double to straight away center field to get the Hornets within a run. Sadie Walker relieved Jenna Sprague in the circle and after getting a foul out,
Kinsey Perine laced a single to right center that tied the game at 6-6.
With one out in the top of the seventh Washburn got back to back walks and Butterbaugh returned to the circle for Sloan. Anderson greeted her with a line drive up the middle that scored one but Brees was thrown out trying to go from first to third as the Hornets limited the damage to one run. The Hornets were then retired in order in the bottom of the inning for the final score.
Leslie Ramos was two for three with two runs and two RBI while
Kinsey Perine went one for three with two RBI as the Hornets were out hit 14-5 in the one run loss.

Emporia State secured the fourth seed in the MIAA Tournament and will play fifth seeded Central Missouri on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Trusler Sports Complex in the quarterfinals.
