Hornet Baseball Unable to Hold Off Ichabods on Sunday

Emporia State scored the first three before falling 6-3 on Sunday; brought tying run to the plate in the ninth

April 26, 2026  -  Emporia State scored the opening three runs of the afternoon, but were unable to hold off Washburn, falling 6-3 on Sunday in a game that featured a rain delay of nearly three hours.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Emporia State got on the board first, as Logan Myers was hit by a pitch to leadoff the game and eventually scored on an RBI single by Noah Steele to make the score 1-0. Quinton Chindamo tossed a scoreless first and then the Hornets added two more to their tally in the second.

Brady Unrein led off the inning with a walk and after the first out, scored from first on an RBI double by Cooper Schwindt. An Ichabod error put runners on the corners and kept the inning at one out, allowing Logan Myers to drive in Schwindt and make the score 3-0.

Washburn would respond in the bottom half however, scoring three runs on two hits, one hit batter and a walk to tie the game 3-3.

The next scoring threats came in the fourth, with Brady Unrein drawing another walk before advancing to third on a stolen base and a throwing error. However, the Hornets were unable to convert the chance as the score remained tied at 3-3.

In the bottom half, the Ichabods picked up a leadoff double and used a sac bunt and an RBI groundout to take a 4-3 lead.

Emporia State left six on base over the next three innings, which included a bases loaded situation in the sixth. Noah Steele tripled with one out in the seventh but was left on the bag as the score stayed 4-3 through seven.

In the top of the eighth, Unrein again drew a leadoff walk and then moved to second on a groundout. With two outs, Tyler Coffin was hit by a pitch to put two runners on, but the weather popped up, forcing the game into a delay with the top of the order coming to the plate.

Following the nearly three-hour delay, the Hornets were unable to convert the opportunity and left two on base. In the top of the ninth, Washburn scored two runs on three hits to extend their advantage to 6-3.

In the ninth, Emporia State got a leadoff single by Evan Abbott, and eventually brought the tying run to the plate with one out. However, a pair of popups end the attempted rally as the Hornets fell 6-3 against the Ichabods.

A LOOK AT THE STATS
Emporia State tallied eight hits, with Noah Steele recording three of his own, marking the ninth game this season with three or more hits. Steele, Logan Myers and Cooper Schwindt all recording an RBI.
