Hornet Baseball Drops Turnpike Tussle Opener Against Ichabods

Emporia State falls 5-4 in game one at Washburn

April 24, 2026 – Emporia State baseball fell 5-4 on Friday evening in the first game of the Turnpike Tussle series against Washburn. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams went scoreless in the first, with Emporia State finally breaking through in the top of the second. Following the first out, the Hornets drew a trio of walks before scoring two runs on a single by Cooper Schwindt to take a 2-0 lead.

After a scoreless third, Washburn was the next to score with their first run in the bottom of the fourth on two hits and a stolen base to make the score 2-1.

The Hornets grabbed a run back in the top of the fifth, as Noah Steele doubled off the wall to open the frame. Steele later came around to score on a double steal to restore the two-run advantage.

Washburn cut the lead in half with an error and an RBI double as the lead was at 3-2 heading to the sixth. Cooper Schwindt led off the top of the sixth with a double and later scored on an RBI groundout by Logan Myers to make the score 4-2.

Washburn put two on with no outs against Hornet starter Colby Deaver, but after a sac bunt were stifled by Nick Woodcock as the 4-2 lead remained intact.

However, the hosts would come score three runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh to take a 5-4 lead.

The Hornets managed just one hit over the final two innings and fell to the Ichabods 5-4 in the series opener.

A LOOK AT THE STATS
The Hornets tallied seven hits, with Cooper Schwindt notching a multi-hit game with two RBI.

Colby Deaver tallied one earned run over 5.1 innings and picked up a pair of strikeouts.

Game two of the series between the Hornets and Ichabods is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 25.
