Saturday Sweep For Emporia State Softball Over Northwest Missouri

Hornets get 11-3, 6-1 wins over Bearcats as the Turn Trusler Teal for AFE Awareness

April 18, 2026-Emporia State softball rolled to a double header sweep of Northwest Missouri on Saturday afternoon at the Trusler Sports Complex.  The Hornets won the matinee 11-3 in six innings before taking the nightcap 6-1.

The Bearcats scored a run in the top of the first but the Hornets responded with six in the bottom of the frame and never looked back in an 11-3 win in the first game of the day.
Northwest got on the board thanks to a two out Kaylee Cords RBI double in the first inning. All nine Emporia State batters reached base to start the bottom of the first as the Hornets scored six runs on six hits, a walk, an error and a fielder's choice.  Taryn Burkhardt led off with a single and stole second.  Sydney Wagner followed with an RBI double to tie the game. Brooke Flewelling reached on a fielding error by the short stop to put runners on the corners before she stole second.  Addison Callaway delivered a two run single up the middle to put ESU ahead 3-1. Brynley Smith reached base on a fielder's choice when Callaway got caught in a run down for the first out. Avery Brewer then singled in front of the big hit of the inning, Ally Miller's three run homer to center field that gave the Hornets a 6-1 lead. Brewer made it 7-1 in the bottom of the second with an RBI single and in the third a Burkhardt sac fly in the scored Kinsey Perine, who had led off with a double, to make it 8-1. With two outs in the fourth, the Bearcats got an RBI triple from Jaeleigh Darnell and a bunt single from Alexis Brown to close the gap to 8-3.  Hannah Butterbaugh then came on in relief of starter Morgan Tomlinson in the circle and got a quick ground out to end the inning.
Flewelling led off the bottom of the sixth with a single and scored on Brewer's triple to right field.  Miller hit her second homer of the game for the 11-3 lead and walk off run rule win. Ally Miller was two for three with two home runs and five RBI while Brewer went two for three with a triple, two RBI and two runs scored.   Every Hornet in the line up had at least one hit in the game. Hannah Butterbaugh tossed 2.1 shut out innings on one hit to earn the win.
 
ESU 6, NWMSU 1
Emporia State used the long ball again in the nightcap, hitting two home runs in the 6-1 win. Brooke Flewelling gave the Hornets a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with her 15th home run of the season. The Bearcats tied it up on a solo homer from Sara Farlow in the second. Emporia State took the lead in the third when Kinsey Perine led off with a single, stole second, went third on a ground out and came home on Sydney Wagner's single.
Brynley Smith led off the fourth with a home run to make it 3-1. With two outs and the bases load Wagner singled through the left side to score Avery Brewer and give the Hornets a 4-1 lead. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth Taryn Burkhardt singled up the middle and stole second.  After a walk to Wagner, Flewelling came through with a two run double to center field to give Emporia State a 6-1 lead.
The Bearcats got two on with one out in the top of the seventh and Izzy Sloan came on in relief of starter Chloe Wilson for the Hornets. Sloan got a ground ball fielder's choice to put runners on the corners then produced a pop to second to end the game.
Brooke Flewelling was two for four with a double, home run and three RBI while Sydney Wagner went two for three with a walk, two RBI and a run scored.  Brynley Smith had a home run in her only official at bat and was walked twice. Chloe Wilson got the win allowing one run while scattering six hits across 6.1 innings with no walks.
 
UP NEXT
The Hornets will wrap up AFE Awareness Weekend on Sunday when the play host to Missouri Western.  First pitch from the Trusler Sports Complex is set for 1:00 p.m.
