Sweep for Emporia State Softball Over #18 Rogers State

Hornets get 3-2 walk off win in game one, 10-4 win in game two

March 13, 2026-Emporia State got a double header sweep of a nationally ranked team for the first time since 2024 as the took two games from #18 Rogers State on Friday afternoon at the Trusler Sports Complex.  The Hornets won game one 3-2 in eight innings and then rolled to a 10-4 win in the nightcap.
 
Emporia State 3, Rogers State 2 (8 Innings)
Emporia State's Hannah Butterbaugh and Rogers State's Harley Culie were locked in a scoreless pitcher's duel through the first seven innings before the offenses came alive in the eighth.
Butterbaugh allowed just four hits through the first seven innings.  With one out in the top of the eighth Karlee Smith hit a comebacker off Butterbaugh's glove to reach base. After sac bunt moved her to second Chloe Cardona dropped a single into short right field and Smith was able to slide around the tag on right fielder Kinsey Perine's throw home. Butterbaugh then got a strikeout to end the inning and keep the Hornets within a run.
Taryn Burkhart led off the eighth when she reached on a fielding error by the shortstop. Brooke Flewelling took her spot at first on a fielder's choice for the first out of the inning. With two outs Addison Callaway singled through the right side to put runners on first and second.  Brewer then stepped up and delivered a home run over the fence in left center for the 3-1 walk off win.
Butterbaugh picked up the win going 8.0 innings and allowing just one run while scattering six hits with three strikeouts and no walks.  Brewer provided the offense with her three run homer.
 
Emporia State 10, Rogers State 4
The Hillcats got on the board first but the Hornets responded with a six run first inning on the way to a 10-4 win in game two.
Rogers State got a two run single from Mariah Belzer in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead.  Sydney Wagner led off the bottom of the first when her dribbler down the first base line was not handle cleanly at first base. Taryn Burkhardt followed with a single to left before Brooke Flewelling drilled her tenth home run of the year to give Emporia State a 3-2 lead. Brynley Smith doubled down the left field line to chase Hillcat starter Kinsley Hill. Addison Callaway reached on a bunt single that sent Smith to third.  Avery Brewer then doubled to left center for a 5-2 ESU lead.  Elina Bartlett drove in Brewer with a single to make it 6-2 after one inning.
Rogers State got two on with two outs in the top of the second when Morgan Tomlinson replaced Maci Hayes in the circle for Emporia State. Tomlinson hit the first batter she faced but then got a strikeout to end the inning with the bases loaded.
The Hornets added a run in the bottom of the second on an RBI single from Smith that plated Burkhardt. Smith delivered again in the bottom of the fourth with a two run double to make it 9-2. Jaden Jordan led off the fifth with a solo homer to get the Hillcats within 9-3. Emporia State had the bases loaded with one out in the fifth with a chance to end the game early but would leave them loaded.
Chloe Wilson replaced Tomlinson to start the sixth and after allowing two on base got a strikeout to end the inning. The Hornets went up 10-3 on a Mallory Moore single in the sixth to drive in Addison Callaway.
In the top of the seventh Rogers State got and RBI single from Taelynn Ballinger and would load the bases with two outs.  Izzy Sloan came on in relief of Wilson and got a line out to end the game.
Brooke Flewelling was two for four with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored while Brynley Smith went three for four with two doubles, three RBI and a run scored. Avery Brewer was one for three with two RBI. Morgan Tomlinson threw 3.1 innings allowing one run on three hits with two strikeouts to earn the win in the circle.
 
UP NEXT
The Hornets will play host to Northeastern State on Saturday. First pitch of the double header is set for 12 noon at the Trusler Sports Complex.
