SOUTHERN SWING
The Emporia State women travel to Southern Arkansas in Magnolia, Ark.on Monday before both teams head to Durant, Okla. on Tuesday to take on Southeastern Oklahoma in non-conference action. The trip to SEOSU will be the final matches of a three week span on the road for the Hornets.
LAST TIME OUT
MEN
The Emporia State men hit the road to Arkansas for a midweek dual and came away with a 5-2 win over Ark.-Fort Smith on Wednesday afternoon. The Lions opened things with a 6-3 win at 1 doubles. The Hornets answered with a 6-3 win at #2 doubles by
Diego Calvo and
Alexis Mattenberger and clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 win by
Duvan Santiago Torres and
Luke West at the #3 spot. The Hornets took a 3-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-1 win by Torres at #4 singles and a 6-4, 6-1 win at #5 singles by Kacer. Elbasnaly clinched the dual win for Emporia State with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) win at #1 singles. The Lions got their first point with a win at #2 singles before Mattenberger won 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 7-5 at the #3 spot.
WOMEN
The Hornet women overcame a 3-1 deficit to get the dual win at Southwest Baptist. SBU earned the doubles point with wins at #1 and #2 while
Giulia Russu and
Ana Fatjo Coll earned the lone ESU win 6-3 at #3 doubles. Southwest Baptist picked up wins at #3 and #1 singles around a 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4) win at #2 by
Giovanna Ferreira as the Hornets faced a 3-1 deficit. Emporia State dominated 4-6 singles to get the dual win.
Sheriden Wichman won 6-3, 6-0 at #4 while Russu picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win at #5 and
Erin Cahill earned a 6-0, 6-3 win at #6 singles.
THE COACHES
John Blackburn is 25-17 in his third season as the head men's coach and Director of Tennis at Emporia State. He spent the previous eight seasons as the head coach at NCAA Division III Methodist University in Fayetteville, N.C. He went 117-58 overall with a 54-4 record in conference play, winning three regular season conference championships, two conference tourney championships and made two NCAA Tournament appearances. He was also a head coach at Eastern Illinois, Coker College and Palm Beach Atlantic.
Former Hornet CyCy Peyroche is 18-23 in her third full season as the permanent coach of the Emporia State women's program. She took over as the interim coach for both teams in December of 2022. She went 6-9 with the men's team and 5-13 in women's action as the interim coach. Peyroche was 23-15 in singles play during her three years as a Hornet before moving into the graduate assistant position.

The Emporia State women are 3-1 on the season. They have three returners led by all-MIAA performers

Yuliya Klimova along with MIAA A-Game Scholar

Erin Cahill and
Giulia Russu are both undefeated against four year competition this spring.
The Hornet men are 4-1 in the spring season. They have nine returners led by senior
Anton Sarunic, who ended last season ranked #24 in the nation in NCAA Division II singles, and the doubles team of graduate student
Gwendal Mazuay and sophomore
Alexis Mattenberger who ended last season ranked #45 in the nation in D2 doubles play.
Mostafa Elbasnaly is undeated in the spring against four year competition.
KNOW THE FOES
The Southern Arkansas women are 3-5 on the season. Taylor Conway is 3-1 in singles play with a 2-0 record at the #5 spot.
The Southeastern Oklahoma women are 2-4 against four year competition this spring. Emilia O'Neill is 3-0 in dual competition at the #1 and #2 position.
The Savage Storm men are 0-4 against four year competition. The doubles team of Luke Tinnock and Davi Costa is 3-0 at teh #3 slot this year.
LAST TIME VS THE MULERIDERS
Emporia State took two points and three match wins from #22 Southern Arkansas on March 2, 2024 in Midlothian, Texas.
Perla Conde and
Sheriden Wichman were able to salvage a 6-3 win at #3 doubles while SAU took the #1 and #2 positions to earn the point.
Anastasia Pesic got the first point of the dual for Emporia State at #5 singles with a 6-1, 6-3 win while
Paige Stranghoner picked up a 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) win at the #6 position.
LAST TIME VS THE SAVAGE STORM
Emporia State tennis started 2022 spring break with a pair of losses at Southeastern Oklahoma in Durant, Okla. The women lost 5-2 while the men fell 7-0.
Andrea Santiago won in split sets 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) at #5 singles while Viktoria Mackova won 6-2, 6-3 at #6 singles for the two women's wins.
Harrison Brown and Luiz Maia had the only victory for the men, winning 6-3 at #2 doubles but it was not enough to register a point in the team standings.
UP NEXT
The Hornet men will play host to Harding on March 7 at the Kossover Family Tennis Center in Emporia. First serve is set for 12 noon.
The next action for the Emporia State women will be on March 14 at home against Ouachita Baptist. First serve from the Kossover Family Tennis Center is set for 10:00 a.m.
