#10 Emporia State Football Moves to 5-0 With 34-22 Win Over Missouri Western

Hornets hold Griffons to 16 points below their season average

October 3, 2010-The tenth ranked Hornets held Missouri Western under 30 points for just the second time this season in a 34-22 win on Saturday at Blackcreek Field in Welch Stadium.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED.
The part of the game was a shootout with the teams combining to score on eight of the first ten possessions of the game.  The difference was Emporia State scoring three touchdowns and a field goal while Missouri Western scored three field goals and a touchdown.
The Hornets took the opening kick and went 80 yards in four plays and Camden Crooks scored on a 19 yard run just 1:02 into the game.  The Griffons responded with a pair of field goals from Latrell Armstrong to make it 7-6 with 3:13 left in the quarter. Emporia State answered with a three play, 70 yard drive capped by a 45 yard pass from Jamison Sarver to Ondrae Beasley with 2:05 remaining.  MWSU used two plays, the last one a 57 yard pass from Isaiah Tate to Crew Myers to quickly answer. The two point conversion failed and the Hornets took a 14-12 lead into the second quarter. 
Sarver found Malik O'Atis for a three yard touchdown to cap a 10 play, 74 yard drive and give Emporia State a 21-12 lead with 13:17 left in the half.  Jordyn Harris picked off Tate on the next possession and the Hornets would go up 24-12 on a 34 yard field goal from Brandon McCary with 9:46 left in the second quarter. Armstrong hit his third field goal of the half, this one from 27 yards out, with 5:17 left to wrap up the scoring s Emporia State led 24-15 at the half.
McCary would score the only points of the third quarter as he connected on a 30 yard field goal with 7:04 left in the period to make it 27-15.
On the opening drive of the fourth quarter Victor Chionuma put the Hornets up 34-15 on a one yard run following a 53 yard pass from Sarver to Kylen Edwards. The Griffons then used a four play, 85 yard drive that took up just 1:42 as they pulled within 34-22 with 11:52 left in the game.  The Hornets went three and out on their next possession and a 48 yard punt from Jordan Cartwright set the Griffons up at their own 23 with 9:43 remaining.  MWSU would have a first and goal at the ESU six yard line before one yard loss on a rush, two incomplete passes and a pair of pre-snap penalties made it fourth and goal from the 17.  Landon Boss hurried Tate into a throw that Emmanuel Ellison was able to make a sliding catch on at the three yard line and force the turnover on downs with 4:46 left.
Emporia State was able to take 2:57 off the clock before punting to Missouri Western with 1:49 left.  The Griffons got down to the Hornet 19 yard line when Chris Johnson II picked off Tate in the end zone with 26 seconds left to seal the win.
 
A LOOK AT THE STATS
Jamison Sarver was 32 of 49 for a career high 390 yards with two touchdowns.  He connected with 11 different receivers in the contest led by Trenden Collins with eight catches for 95 yards. Malik O'Atis had four receptions for 51 yards and touchdown while Ondraye Beasley added two catches for 51 yards and a score.  Camden Crooks had 110 yards from scrimmage with 83 rushing yards on 17 carries along with three catches for 27 yards.
Defensively Aidan Hicks tied his career high with 11 tackles while Landon Boss had a career high 4.5 tackles for loss with a sack and a forced fumble.  Tyler Schultze had seven tackles and three pass break ups to set the Emporia State career record with 32 pass break ups in his four years.
Emporia State won the turnover battle with two interceptions and a fumble recovery while not turning the ball over themselves.
 
UP NEXT
After a three game home stand, the #10 Hornets will go on the road to take on Missouri Southern. Kick-off from Hughes Stadium in Joplin, Mo. is set for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 10.

NOTES
The Hornets improved to 5-0 for the first time since 2015.
