Hornet Softball Run-Rules Orediggers on Saturday

Emporia State takes down Colorado Mines 10-1 in five innings; Wehunt and Smith both homer for the Hornets

January 31, 2026 – Emporia State softball picked up their second run-rule win of the weekend on Saturday, defeating Colorado Mines 10-1 in five innings in their lone game of the day.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets wasted no time against the Orediggers, as they put up a six spot in the first frame. Brooke Flewelling got the scoring started with an infield single to score Sydney Wagner, and after the second out of the inning, Karli Wehunt delivered with her first career home run to make the score 3-0. Emporia State added three more in the inning with a bases loaded walk by Elina Bartlett and a Colorado Mines error that plated two more.
 
Emporia State pick up a lone run in both the third and fourth frames, as a Juliana De Luna single scored Leslie Ramos in the third, while Taryn Burkhardt stole home in the fourth to make the score 8-0.
 
The Orediggers finally got on the board against Hornet starter Maci Hayes with their lone run of the game.
 
The Hornets would answer back with two more in the fifth as a Brynley Smith solo homer and an RBI single from Taryn Burkhardt made the score 10-1.
 
Hannah Butterbaugh finished the game in the circle for Emporia State, holding the Orediggers scoreless to seal the run-rule win for the Hornets.
 
A LOOK AT THE STATS
Taryn Burkhardt, Brooke Flewelling and Brynley Smith all had multi-hit games, with Smith and Karlie Wehunt hitting their first home runs of the season.
 
In the circle, Maci Hayes picked up the win as she allowed just one run in 3.2 innings. Hannah Butterbaugh pitched 1.1 scoreless innings to end the game.
 
UP NEXT
Emporia State will wrap up the Lone Star Classic with two games on Sunday. The first for the Hornets will be against Eastern New Mexico with first pitch scheduled for 9:00 a.m.
