January 22, 2026 – The Hornet men led for nearly 33 minutes on Thursday night as they picked up an 84-71 road win over Northeastern State.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The lead changed hands three times in the first three minutes before Emporia State put together an 11-2 scoring run to take a 15-7 lead into the first media timeout at the 15:06 mark of the first half. The break worked in favor of the hosts, as Northeastern State scored nine straight over the next three and a half minutes to take a 16-15 advantage.
Again, the lead would swap between the two teams, with neither side leading by more than four points again until a 7-2 run for the Hornets following the under-five timeout game Emporia State a 40-31 lead, their largest margin of the first half.
Emporia State would take a 47-42 lead into halftime, as they shot 19-32 from the floor in the first 20 minutes.
Following the break, the Hornets were able to push their lead back to nine points, but the Riverhawks rallied with 12 straight points, taking a 56-53 lead which proved to be the largest of the night for Northeastern State.
The Hornets withstood the run, and eventually put together another run of their own to regain control. At the 9:49 mark with the Hornets trailing 59-56, Emporia State outscored the Riverhawks 16-4 over nearly five minutes to again find themselves ahead by nine.
Emporia State would lead by at least two possession for the remainder of the game, with a pivotal point coming with just over 90 seconds left in the game as
Chris Harris beat the buzzer to extend the lead back to 78-71 and begin a 9-0 run to end the game, sealing the 84-71 win.
A LOOK AT THE STATS
Emporia State shot 49.2% from the floor, their highest mark against a MIAA opponent this season. Three Hornets scored in double figures, led by
Treyvon Taylor who scored a career-high 21 points.
Chris Harris added 18 points, his ninth consecutive game with double-digit points, while
Trey Redd had a double-double with 17 points and 10 assists.
