Emporia State scored five in the ninth before falling 14-13 in game two against Washburn

April 12, 2025 – Emporia State baseball nearly completed a comeback on Saturday afternoon against Washburn as the Hornets scored five runs in the ninth before falling 14-13 in game two.

Washburn got the scoring started on the game's first pitch, with a home run off the bat of Payton McHarg, the first of three for the Ichabod third basemen in the game. Sammy Padilla tied the game in the bottom of the second with the first of his three RBI in the game.

The offense continued for the Ichabods through the top of the sixth, as Washburn eventually built a 10-2 advantage over the Hornets. Emporia State began to rally in the bottom half, as Padilla singled two drive in two runs and make the score 10-4.

Following a scoreless top of the seventh from Coby Rogers, Emporia State would add four more to their total in the bottom half. Dominic Felix began the scoring with a solo home run and with two outs, Elijah Reeves singled to score a pair and make the score 10-7. With Reeves on first and Padilla on third, the Ichabods attempted to pick off Reeves, but an errant throw brought in Padilla to make the score 10-8 heading to the final two innings.

Both teams went scoreless in the eighth before Washburn woke up the bats in the top of the ninth, hitting three homers to build a 14-8 lead over the Hornets.

Felix singled to lead off the ninth, and with one out Jovanni Toledo homered for the second straight game, trimming the deficit to 14-10. With two outs, Elijah Reeves walked, and Logan Myers was hit by a pitch to bring up Peyton Lewis. Lewis was able to extend the at-bat with two strikes before belting his sixth homer of the season to close the gap to 14-13.

The Hornets rally ended there, as a pop out ended the game as Emporia State fell 14-13 in game two.
