March 9, 2025 – Emporia State scored 18 runs against Maryville for the second time this weekend on Sunday afternoon, as the Hornets picked up an 18-5 run-rule win over the Saints.
Both teams were held scoreless in the first two innings, before Emporia State got the scoring started in the third.
Peyton Lewis gave the Hornets a 1-0 lead with one-out home run. The lead would double with a wild pitch to score
TJ Racherbaumer and a two RBI double from
Jovanni Toledo and an RBI single from
Sammy Padilla rounded out the five-run frame.
In the bottom half, Maryville picked up their lone run off Hornet starter
Cade Barton to make the score 5-1.
Logan Myers quickly restored the five-run lead in the fourth, leading off the inning with a solo home run, his fourth of the year. Barton would strand two runners in the fourth to preserve the 6-1 score, before Emporia State put together their second five-run inning of the game.
A fielding error from the Saints added two runs for the Hornets and
Peyton Lewis made the score 10-1 with a two RBI double. After a walk drawn by Racherbaumer,
Noah Steele capped off the inning with a single to drive in Lewis.
Nick Woodcock replaced Barton in the fifth and struck out two batters in his first inning of work. The five-run frames continued in the sixth for Emporia State, as the Hornets used two hits, three walks and a pair of hit batters to extend their lead to 16-1.
Brady Unrein added to the final tally in the seventh, lifting his third home run down the right field line to increase the advantage to 18-1.
Maryville would score four runs in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to stave off the Emporia State run-rule victory on Sunday.
Four Hornets recorded multi-hit games, including
TJ Racherbaumer who had three of his own.
Peyton Lewis and
Brady Unrein each had three RBI in the game.
Cade Barton picked up the win, his second of the season on the mound as he allowed just one run in 4.0 innings and tallied six strikeouts with no walks allowed.
